The Fidonews at a Glance
As promised last week, we have number two in the "Confessions of an
Ex-Sysop" series by Steve Townsley this week, and there's more to
come. Inspired by Steve's first article, Petko Bossakov starts, what
promises to be a another interesting series, with a piece called "Why
I like Fidonet, part 1: The abuse".
OL'WDB sent in something for his column. It's called "Stop to
salute on Memorial Day". It's a wee bit chauvinistic to this editors
taste, but I know many of our US readers like this stuff.
A couple of announcements. First of a new echo, "Announcing a new
message conference..." by Bob Short, then a request from Ward Dossche
for help on locating any remaining fido systems in Portugal and Saudi
Arabia in "EVER BEEN ON A HOLIDAY TO...".
Finally a couple of jokes. "Andy Roony's Sayings" by Warren Bonner
plus a "Russian anecdote" that I cut from ENET.SYSOP.

GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
Confessions of an Ex-Sysop (2)
Steve Townsley stownsley@g7spn.org
Last time I said that technically FidoNet was as relevant as a 360KB
floppy disk. If that offends you I apologise. Running a FidoNet node
always took hard work and dedication. Despite this no-one should kid
themselves that running a FidoNet BBS is an expanding hobby. The fact
that no new softare is being written for FidoNet is critical in this
regard.
Just recently I had a look around websites for FidoNet compatible
software. In place after place there were notices that this or that
version was no longer being updated. In short the most talented people
we (the Sysop Community) had in FidoNet have left. Consider a year
like 1989. At that time you had people like Thom Henderson still
developing SEAdog (SEAMail), Opus CBCS was being updated, as was
FrontDoor etc etc. Today there is no significant "killer apps" being
developed.
I have detected some attempt to create IP connected software but there
seems no standard and, worse still, a seemingly never ending attempt
to shoehorn IP aware products into the telephone-centric nodelist.
Without talented programming and technical innovation FidoNet cannot
evolve into the next generation. It is not that FidoNet MUST go
Internet but rather the Internet is now the medium that FidoNet's
original audience use. They don't dial their local BBS and ask for
help about a software product. Instead they log-on to the vendors
website. More importantly for FidoNet Sysops is the fact that
connecting to their ISP is probably cheaper than dialing the nearest
FidoNet node and the Internet means that the difference between long
distance and local has disappeared.
FidoNet should now be issuing new nodelists where the normal activity
is based on Internet connectivity and that nodes that have dial-up
gateways are unusual.
My observation is that several technologies are coming togther that
makes a leap to the net easy for FidoNet. I also believe that right
now the need for FidoNet on the Internet is more important than ever.
Looking at the technology first. DSL is now providing the means for
"always on" Internet connections. People with DSL can run a BBS 24
hours a day or some kind of virtual BBS with the ability of forwarding
entire message boards to clients that call in from dial-up Internet
connections. Peer-to-Peer networks are showing that we can share file
areas, messages and chat via a central computer that simply keeps all
the clients informed what's available.
I believe new FidoNet server software is needed in which clients call
in and are able to download messages (echomail), files, and have
realtime chat (instant messaging). I think such software is necessary
because the Internet is now moving to Pay-as-you-go model for value
FIDONEWS 19-21 Page 4 27 May 2002
added services - the very services Fido BBS's had for callers in the
1980s and 1990s.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Why I like Fidonet, part 1: The abuse
Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1
After having read the article "Confessions of an Ex-Sysop", I couldn't
help generally agreeing with it. However, it made a few thoughts pop
up in my mind, and if you allow me, I will quote here the part that
made me ponder the meaning of Life, the Universe, Everything, and,
over all, Fidonet.
"What disturbs me sometimes is the reverse snobbery that exists in
FidoNet about the Internet. You must have come across the argument
that 'I run my BBS because it's much faster than the net with all
those graphics and adverts'. Instead I would prefer sysops just to say
I run FidoNet because I like it."
That's true, I run Fidonet because I like it. But... why the hell do I
like it? I'm not the kind of person who doesn't like progress. It is
very fashionable nowadays to say how bad modern technology is, how it
alienates us, etc. All this is said by people who would hardly be able
to live in a cave, but want to look intelligent. I believe this to be
a pure form of snobbery and reactionism.
I am writing this article to defend Fidonet, and that's to make it
clear that if I am defending a technology, it certainly has its
advantages.
To me, personally, it's not the cost factor, because the price of the
Internet access has become quite affordable in my country. Although
dial-up is still the most widespread method of accessing the Internet,
it is cheap and has a reasonable transfer speed.
It's also not some strange form of nostalgy. I couldn't feel sorry for
the good old days, because I was in no way involved with Fidonet
during its "years of greatness".
So, while the Internet is still a faster, better, and more flexible
technology, it probably lacks something that Fidonet can provide...
While thinking, wanting to find out what exactly it is, I have decided
to write this article.
It is a fact that on each computer network there are many misguided
individuals whose only desire is to take advantage of the services
provided in a forbidden, unfair or impolite way.
Fidonet, however, is not a place where they can prolificate. Maybe the
reason for this is the way it's organised, maybe it's just too small,
maybe only the right people join it. You probably have noticed the
whole armory of protection methods you need to feel comfortable and
safe on the Internet. To many people, use of thousands of firewalls,
anti-spam filters, ad-blocking software, anti-spyware tools, is
FIDONEWS 19-21 Page 5 27 May 2002
acceptable. To me, something in the way the Internet works must be
changed.
Spam. A meal that we're served several times a day. I receive about
fifteen pieces on my Internet account everyday, but since I joined
Fidonet, I've only seen one there, and it actually originated from the
Internet. Actions were promptly taken to deny access to that user. I
believe you all remember that occurence, when a message was posted in
all echos on February 12 this year.
I understand that if the size of Fidonet increases, there would be
more abusers and more spam, for sure. Both electronic mail
technologies use a store-and-forward method, which makes it hard to
track.
However, in Fidonet at least you can be sure that you can talk to a
cooperating Sysop, who will do anything to find the abuser and ruin
their life (heh heh heh), and not to an autoresponder, which is
installed, because the dudes at that ISP's abuse department are so
overworked that they can't even personally contact you. Having no
feedback, I can assume that almost half of spam reports on the
Internet are ignored, simply because the ISPs can't cope with them
all.
To put it in a nutshell, you can be on a BBS, or run one, without the
fear of being hacked. You can post your Internet email address without
worrying about it being picked up by spammers. You can send Netmail,
which is technically very insecure, but you know that the Sysops along
its route will do whatever they can to deliver it, and keep it
confidential. You can feel safe and comfortable - and this is not an
illusory feeling.
How's that for a reason to like Fidonet?

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
Stop to salute on Memorial Day
wdbonner@pacbell.net
by Capt. John Rasmussen
EAGLE BASE, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Army News Service, May 22, 2002)
--
It was raining "cats and dogs" and I was late for physical training.
Traffic was backed up at Fort Campbell, Ky., and was moving way too
slowly. I was probably going to be late and I was growing more and
more impatient.
The pace slowed almost to a standstill as I passed Memorial Grove, the
site built to honor the soldiers who died in the Gander airplane
crash, the worst redeployment accident in the history of the 101st
Airborne Division (Air Assault).
Because it was close to Memorial Day, a small American flag had been
placed in the ground next to each soldier's memorial plaque.
My concern at the time, however, was getting past the bottleneck,
getting out of the rain and getting to PT on time.
All of a sudden, infuriatingly, just as the traffic was getting
started again, the car in front of me stopped.
A soldier, a private of course, jumped out in the pouring rain and ran
over toward the grove.
I couldn't believe it! This knucklehead was holding up everyone for
who knows what kind of prank. Horns were honking.
I waited to see the butt-chewing that I wanted him to get for making
me late.
He was getting soaked to the skin. His BDUs were plastered to his
frame. I watched-as he ran up to one of the memorial plaques, picked
up the small American flag that had fallen to the ground in the wind
and the rain, and set it upright again.
Then, slowly, he came to attention, saluted, ran back to his car, and
drove off.
I'll never forget that incident. That soldier, whose name I will
never know, taught me more about duty, honor, and respect than a
hundred books or a thousand lectures.
That simple salute -- that single act of honoring his fallen brother
and his flag -- encapsulated all the Army values in one gesture for
me. It said, "I will never forget. I will keep the faith. I will
finish the mission. I am an American soldier."
FIDONEWS 19-21 Page 7 27 May 2002
I thank God for examples like that.
And on this Memorial Day, I will remember all those who paid the
ultimate price for my freedom, and one private, soaked to the skin,
who honored them.

FIDONET NOTICES

Announcing a new message conference for FidoNet sysops only!
By Bob Short, 1:105/38
Some of you know how FN_SYSOP has changed over the years, for good to
bad to good, and so forth. The echo's rules have been interpreted
differently by many different moderators, and are subject to changes
at the discretion of the moderator, without the approval of the real
owners... sysops. Because of this, it's history has been plagued with
flame wars, threats, and poor moderating by some.
FIDO_SYSOP was created to afford sysops a place to meet that will
maintain it's intergrety and restriction to FidoNet sysops, and
protect participants from abusive behavior, by writing into the rules
restrictions on what may be changed, and by whom. This exclusive
FidoNet Only echo is both owned and changed by the participating
sysops, and not by any moderator.
I encourage all FidoNet sysops to link to this echo, even if you have
no interest in "politics". As an international echo, carried by all
the backbones, it will give each of you an opportunity to address the
specific issues that concern you, and many upper level coordinators
who are active there. No topic is "off topic", so you are free to
talk about anything on your mind.
I am particularly interested in seeing more people from zones 2-6
joining, as there are events and Policy issues up for debate which may
have an affect on all of us. Your input is very important!
So, link up to FIDO_SYSOP today and see what and who you've been
missing!

EVER BEEN ON A HOLIDAY TO PORTUGAL OR SAUDI ARABIA?
By Ward Dossche@2:292/854
... because if you have I need your help in the management of zone-2.
For quite some time the segment of Portugal (region-36) and Saudi
Arabia (region-54) have not been updated anymore. Mail for both
remains on hold here indefinitely.
I can reach the RC54 but he says that the region has folded, perhaps
that a few independent systems operate via whatever technology but he
is unable to provide further information.
RC36 whom I've considered as a personal friend over the years seems to
have dissappeared from the globe. Mail remains on hold forever for
months now where everything in the past got collected several times a
FIDONEWS 19-21 Page 9 27 May 2002
week. ZC/4 has been courteous enough to provide me with this RC's
email-address derived from Portugese language echoes, but to no avail.
The email-address of another Portuguese sysop in the nodelist yields
no answer either.
The logical consequence will be that I will have to remove the entries
of both regions from the nodelist unless some form of life can be
detected in these regions.
Does anyone anywhere in Fidonet have a contact with sysops in both
these regions or a clue what to do about it? If so, please send me a
netmail at my regular address 2:292/854 or use email via
"wd@skynet.be".
Thank you for helping ... if you can.

Andy Roony's Sayings
By Warren Bonner <wdbonner@pacbell.net>
1. If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it
says on the aspirin bottle. Take two and keep away from children.
2. It's a very strange name they picked for "Social Security." For
what they actually send you, you can't afford to be "social" nor can
you really feel "secure."
3. Short skirts have a tendency to make men polite. Have you ever seen
a man get on a bus ahead of one?
4. It is hard to understand how a cemetery raised its burial cost and
blamed it on the cost of living.
5. We are born naked, wet, and hungry. Then things get worse.
6. The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting
something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
7. It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end to
end, someone would be stupid enough to try and pass them.
8. If the shoe fits, get another one just like it.
9. The things that come to those who wait may be the things left by
those who got there first.
10. Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish,
and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.
11. When you're swimming in the creek and an eel bites your cheek,
that's a moray!
12. A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.
13. The only cure for insomnia is to get more sleep.
14. Everybody lies, but it doesn't matter since nobody listens.
15. I wished the buck stopped here. I could use a few.
16. When you go into court you are putting yourself in the hands of 12
people that weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File
----------------------------------|----------------------------------

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
