The Fidonews at a Glance
In the General articles column, the turn has come to number four in
the "Confessions of an Ex-Sysop" series by Steve Townsley. Then we run
Petko Bossakov's second part of his series "Why I like Fidonet...".
This week, among other things, about some economic aspects on fidonet
vs. internet.
For the Rebuttal column Andrea Santos writes some comments on one
of Steve's previous articles in "Resentments of an Ex-Sysop".
Warren Bonner has sort of a rerun this week. It's a poem that was
first published early last year, then with the signature 'anonymous'.
Now the proper writer has asked that this shall be corrected, so...
Well read all about it in "Correction".
As usual you'll have to put up with a couple of jokes too. First
out is "Marriage in heaven?", a lawyer joke by Warren Bonner. And
then, from the archives, "Children's letters to God". I think I picked
this up from the FUNNY echo some time ago.

Confessions of an Ex-Sysop (4)
By Steve Townsley, stownsley@g7spn.org
When I first started on this kick of writing a few words for FidoNews
within hours it became a sort of retrospective. No matter how much you
look forward there was always the temptation to look back. It's simply
amazing how many abandoned websites there are out there that are
indexed under FidoNet. At least I assume they are abandoned since the
last serious attempt to do an update was four or five years ago.
Take the FidoNet Standards website. You pop along there looking for
information on how to connect with DSL and IP over the net and most of
the documentation talks about modems and dialing. I remember hot
debate on type-3 packets - what happened guys?
Some activities were pure nostalgia. Back in 1988 I had the great
pleasure of meeting Wynn Wagner III - the author of Opus. I was nice
ot find that he was still around and on the web although apparently
with no connection to FidoNet these days. In case you ever read my
musings Wynn - a heartfelt thank you and I did donate money to a UK
aids charity. I also searched for Thom Henderson and was pleased to
email him a personal thanks. His SEAdog program was worth the $50.00
and his ideas created the foundations of crashmail and much more.
Incidently the best I could figure it was Thom's wife is running an
ISP and he helps out in semi- retirement. Of course I found loads of
others. I found out what Randy Bush is doing now and why Fido 12 ended
up as fragments of source code on Tom Jennings site.
The most important lesson was that the key players in FidoNet's growth
can no longer be contacted via FidoNet but by the Internet. Key point
is that FidoNet was a community built on the most accessible network
of the mid-1980s, the phone network. Today FidoNet needs to move on to
the most accessible network of this era - the Internet.
One fun website was a chart of FidoNet nodes. It was fun for me to
remember when Europe dropped out of FidoNet because the nodelist
processor couldn't cope with the expansion! What I discovered was that
FidoNet peaked in the mid-90s with almost 35,000 listed systems and is
now about a third of that. Crucially the greatest decline corresponds
with easy Internet access and the greatest expansion corresponds with
the least favourable Internet access.
At it's beginning FidoNet was subversive. It defied the rules and it's
main purpose was getting the mail through. It even did this largely
without SPAM and without commercial advertising. Today the Internet is
great for getting email but it is still unable to prevent SPAM and,
the activities of big corporations such as AOL and MS mean that web
browsing is increasingly a method of advertisement delivery. There is
a grim future of an all embracing WWW that is controlled by
corporations and whose content is censored.
It's my view that FidoNet needs to re-invent itself to be Internet
FIDONEWS 19-23 Page 3 10 Jun 2002
friendly. We need a new "Tom Jennings" or a new "Thom Henderson". We
need software that is happy to service phone calls or transmit over
the Internet. We need directory services so that other users of
FidoNet Internet Clients can be found. We need places where online
conferences can be hosted and distributed securely.
FidoNet also needs to be virtualised. No longer are people limited by
disk space. BBS systems don't have to be vast maintained systems that
are hard work but rather just automated hubs where mail and echomail
is exchanged along with file requests. Perhaps the two most important
things are an advanced directory system to replace the nodelists and
absolute security/spam protection.
Of course new FidoNet would have to be Windows and perhaps even Linux
friendly. It's a tall order but I think it is the only long term
future for the FidoNet community.
My skills are in testing and documentation. So if any programmers have
the new FidoNet under test I am prepared to start writing the user
documentation.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Why I like Fidonet, part 2: The free lunch
Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1
I couldn't write this article on time for the last Fidonews, but I
hope that you will forgive me, because I have been having a lot of
stuff to deal with recently, like term tests at school, and a new cat.
Anyway, enough about personal matters. In a previous Fidonews I wrote
an article about what I consider the main advantage of Fidonet over
the Internet. Now I am going to talk about what makes them so
different, and why it is better to be a participating user in both if
you want to have a truly good online experience.
Many of our fellow sysops like to think about the Internet as a
menace, as the enemy. The truth is that Fido and the Web are
completely different, and it's good. It provides diversity. And it
means that they don't compete, but each one provides what the other
lacks. I think it's not only the Internet that's killing us, but this
is beyond the scope of this article.
What I meant to say is that both have proven that there IS, after all,
such thing as a free lunch. Fidonet, as an amateur network, and the
BBS, as a hobby, provide services that are completely free.
As we all know, Fidonet is free, because of the strange and almost
perverse will (or urge) of some "cantankerous" sysops to make it so.
Some invest more into their systems, some less, but we all see the
result.
The WWW, on the other hand, is free, but for-profit (no, that's not an
oxymoron in today's world). As many other aspects of human life, it is
totally commercialized.
FIDONEWS 19-23 Page 4 10 Jun 2002
That's not to say that I'm against this. That commercialization has
done wonders for the Internet and even for humanity as a whole. What I
mean to say is simply that sometimes we need to take a break.
Everyone keeps complaining about all those ads, banners, pop-ups, that
keep becoming more and more aggressive. I think this whining is overly
exaggerated, although it's true to some extent.
Okay, adverts are everywhere on the web. They irritate the eyes, and
slow down our downloads. But imagine what would it be without them. No
free website hosting. No free e-mail. Adding a guestbook to your
website: $3.75. Entering our download database: $9.99. Access to our
website which informs about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide: $1.15.
To put it in a nutshell, you have no alternative to viewing all those
banners. Live with it, or don't use the Internet. Or wait... How about
Fidonet? You can simply dial the nearest node, and dive into the great
world of fast transfers, friendly users (well, honestly), and a
cantankerous, but generally nice, sysop.
I'm not telling anyone to ditch the Internet. But by using both
networks as alternative sources of information, you can greatly
increase the ease of finding what you need, and have a much more
rewarding time when communicating real-time or via electronic mail.

Resentments of an Ex-Sysop
By Andrea Santos
<andrea.santos@santronics.com>
Seems Mr. Townsley has quite a few of them. If one is an Ex-sysop, so
be it! There's nothing about that status of which to be proud or not
... simply a fact of life! High horse *Cs have been around forever.
They are rarely the reason a sysop leaves Fidonet but this generally
sounds good as a parting shot, when the real reason (personal
circumstances, money, health, job or sheer boredom) remains a mystery.
Dialing a BBS is hardly necessary today when so many of the remaining
systems are available via the Internet. That $50.00 investment
sitting on Mr. Townsley's shelf is a far cry from the hundreds and
thousands of dollars sysops spent over the years for the latest and
greatest modems to partake in a hobby which provided years of
enjoyment.
Can't draw comparisons between the Internet and Fidonet and everyone
who did got frustrated real quick. Those who continued on and remain
today in Fidonet did/do so because of the value and benefits received
from the network. Having had Internet access for much of the last 10
years, I've yet to make one friend strictly through Internet
communications. Conversely, the friends I made in Fidonet were too
numerous to count and I still keep in touch with quite a few people.
That tells me that for the years I spent in the Network, I was part of
a real and manageable Community, not a vast, cluttered expanse, and
this is where Fidonet continues to shine today.
Surely, Mr. Townsley knows that a dedicated phone line is no longer
necessary to partake in Fidonet. Fido mail delivery, both netmail and
echo, has moved largely to the Internet. As long as you've got the
software to make that happen, it's done and quite easily. Not having
a phone line is nothing more than an excuse to justify other reasons
for not being connected.
I do find it rather condescending that Mr. Townsley doesn't '"object"
to people running Fidonet,' as if current members need some sort of
approval for enjoying a hobby. Bowling hasn't much advanced in the
past century either, yet countless people around the world still hang
out at the alleys and have a grand ole time. Same can be accomplished
in Fidonet ... if the sysop WANTS to be there!
The comment "my BBS is much faster than the Net" doesn't even make
sense. Perhaps Mr. Townsley was referring to Fidonet vs. the Internet
because there are more BBSs today in the Western World on the Net than
strictly dialup. In my neck of the woods, residential DSL has been
available for less than a year. There are certainly parts of my state
and the rest which don't have DSL at all, and the $50.00/month cost
for DSL is significantly more than a bare bones residential phone line
to call a local ISP for Fidonet/Internet mail delivery.
FIDONEWS 19-23 Page 6 10 Jun 2002
Is my LP turntable technically relevant today? No, but I sure
wouldn't give it away. Doing so would prevent me from listening to
some of my favorite recordings at my convenience.
Same goes for my 2400 baud modem, my original keyboard, computer and
monitor and countless dated programs I no longer use. These items may
now be stored away but I recognize all as contributing to years of
enjoyment and harbor no resentments.
And neither should Mr. Townsely. Fidonet provided connectivity to the
world when nothing else was available as conveniently or economically.
Be grateful!

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
Correction
By Warren Bonner, wdbonner@pacbell.net
Folks, at the end of this beautiful poem is some of the correspondence
that is the reason for rerunning it a year later, the other reason is
that your "Fathers Day" (at least in north America), is just around
the corner.
DADDY'S DAY (2000)
Her hair up in a ponytail, her favorite dress tied with a bow
Today was Daddy's Day at school, and she couldn't wait to go
But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home
Why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone
But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say
What to tell her classmates, on this Daddy's Day
But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone
And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home
But the little girl went to school, eager to tell them all
About a dad she never sees, a dad who never calls
There were daddies along the wall in back, for everyone to meet
Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats
One by one the teacher called, a student from the class
To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed
At last the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare
Each of them were searching, for a man that wasn't there
"Where's her daddy at?" She heard a boy call out
"She probably doesn't have one." Another student dared to shout
And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say
"Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day."
The words did not offend her, as she smiled at her friends
And looked back at her teacher, who told her to begin
And with hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak
And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique
"My Daddy couldn't be here, because he lives so far away
But I know he wishes he could be, with me on this day
And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know
All about my daddy, and how much he loves me so
He loved to tell me stories, he taught me to ride my bike
He surprised me with pink roses, and he taught me to fly a kite
We used to share fudge sundaes, and ice cream in a cone
And though you cannot see him, I'm not standing all alone
'Cause my daddy's always with me, even though we are apart
I know because he told me, he'll forever be here in my heart"
With that her little hand reached up, and lay across her chest
Feeling her own heartbeat, beneath her favorite dress
FIDONEWS 19-23 Page 8 10 Jun 2002
And from somewhere in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears
Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years
For she stood up for the love, of a man not in her life
Doing what was best for her, doing what was right
And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the
crowd
She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud
"I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star
And if he could he'd be here, but heavens just too far
But sometimes when I close my eyes, it's like he never went away"
And then she closed her eyes, and saw him there that day
And to her mother's amazement, she witnessed with surprise
A room full of daddies and children, all starting to close their eyes
Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside
Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side
"I know you're with me daddy." To the silence she called out
And what happened next made believers, of those once filled with doubt
Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been
closed
But there placed on her desktop, was a beautiful fragrant pink rose
And a child was blessed, if only a moment, by the love of her shining
bright star
And given the gift of believing, that heaven is never too far.

HI again Cheryl,
To go into every Fidonet system operators message/storage base
really isn't possible. But I would be delighted to submit the
"correct version" to the Editor for a reprint. I'm not the Ed
anymore, in fact there has been two Editors since me. But I think
he will accept my submission as the correct thing to do AS you
have offered permission.
Incidentally that is a neat trick to check on "Author unknown"
items, THANKS! I will be using that lil' trick in the future.
So if you will send me your latest version quick, I will get it
into the editor for release Sunday, with apologies to you attached
for sure.
Thanks for your time!
Hugs warmly returned.

Marriage in heaven?
By Warren Bonner <wdbonner@pacbell.net>
On their way to get married, a young couple is involved in a fatal car
accident.
The couple find themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates waiting
for St. Peter to process them into Heaven.
While waiting, they begin to wonder, COULD they possibly get married
in Heaven?
When St. Peter shows up, they asked him.
St. Peter says, "I don't know, this is the first time anyone has
asked. Let me go find out." And he leaves.
The couple sat and waited for an answer . . . for a couple of months .
. . and they discussed if they were allowed to get married in Heaven,
SHOULD they get married, what with the eternal aspect of it all. "What
if it doesn't work?" they wondered, "Are we stuck together forever?"
After yet another month, St. Peter finally returns, looking somewhat
bedraggled.
"Yes," he informs the couple, "you CAN get married in Heaven."
Great!" said the couple, "But we were just wondering, what if things
don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"
St. Peter, red - faced, slams his clipboard onto the ground.
"What's wrong?" asked the frightened couple.
FIDONEWS 19-23 Page 12 10 Jun 2002
"OH, COME ON!" St. Peter shouts, "It took me three months to find a
priest up here! Do you have ANY idea how long it'll take me to find a
lawyer?!!!!!"

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
