The Fidonews at a Glance
In "More Web Pages from the Web-Idiot" Frank Vest continues his
exploring of different fido-realted web pages. Just a little note from
the editor: this article was actually sent in for last week's issue,
but got lost in the mail. Hence the reference to "last week", that has
now become "two weeks ago".
More from Frank in a short notice about "New Nodelist Format?" plus
one for the jokes section, "What History Doesn't Tell Us." A piece
that reminds me a little of the Mad Magazine. Does that still exist by
the way? I haven't seen or heard about Alfred E Neumann, Don Martin
and the other guys for quite some time.
The fidonews kitchen serves "Leeky Crockpot" this week, from Carol
of course, who else? :)
Another joke from Warren Bonner, "The Donkey", is yet another one
from the farmers world. And that's it for now.

FIDONET WEB PAGE REVIEWS
=================================================================
More Web Pages from the Web-Idiot
From Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
Last week, I did a little article that was prompted because Steve
Townsley had mentioned in an article that there were few Web pages
about Fidonet that were up to date. The response was good on my little
listing of Fidonet Web pages and a suggestion was made that I do a
follow up on it. Sooo.... Here we go :-)
There are many sites on the WWW about Fidonet. True, some are old and
outdated, but a search of the WWW can get some good results.
Last week's listing was mainly English in nature. I'll try to get
some international sites this time. Please forgive me if my list and
the comments I make are not correct in all aspects. I speak, read and
write English only.
I'd like to also invite other Fidonet Sysops, Points, Users and
software Authors to write reviews of Fidonet sites, software and such.
I'm only one person and my language barriers prevent me from
understanding many of the WWW sites in other languages.
http://www.was-ist-fido.de/
Reading this German site from a translation engine, I find that it is
a site telling what Fidonet is and giving links to Fidonet resources.
An excellent site!
http://www.writebynight.com/fidonet.html
This is sort of a "counter part" to the above page, though not by the
same person(s). It is in English and, like the above page, gives
information on Fidonet. There's even a link to the above page there.
:-)
http://www.fido-deluxe.de.vu/
Fido-Package deluxe. A complete Fidonet Point package. It will
install and offer the user a Point address with a selected choice of
Nodes. I'm not sure of all the details and might be wrong on the
above since not all of the site is in English. Someone please write a
review on this software for the Fidonews. It sounds like a great idea!
http://winramturbo.com/fidonet/index.html
An excellent site to check out if you are interested in Fidonet
history. Frank Robbins and others contribute to this large site of
information. It is a "work in progress", but worth a look over.
http://www.rbt.com.br/
The site of Fidonet Region 80. The page is in Portuguese and, if I
remember right, maintained by the R80C. So, if it is outdated, contact
the R80C. Hi Renato. :-)
FIDONEWS 19-30 Page 4 29 Jul 2002
http://biseonline.com/fido_int/
This site will probably keep me busy.... if it draws enough
attention. This is the "Fidonet International an BBS Search Engine".
It is a JavaScript powered search engine of sorts. All the sites
listed have to be manually entered into the engine's data base, but
that's life. There's not much there right now, but that might change
soon. :) Check this site out and let me know if you have a web page
to add to it.
On the above search engine:
I think it would be great to have a "real" search engine for Fidonet
sites. Web rings are fine, but a place where we, as Nodes, Points,
Users and others could point people to that want to find information
about Fidonet would be great!
So, here is another list of sites that I know of. Once again, Yes,
Virginia, there is a Fidonet out there. It's not impossible to find.
It is in the heart and soul of all of us that love it and keep it
going. :)
Regards,
Frank Vest - Sysop, Collin County Station - 1:124/6308

FIDONET NOTICES
=================================================================
New Nodelist Format?
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
The Echotag is NET_DEV. The subject is a new Nodelist format for
Fidonet. The premis is that the current format doesn't allow for
expansion, Internet Only Systems and other changes that need to be
made to accomidate new technology to move Fidonet into the future.
Several formats and methods are being discussed from DNS options to
adding on to the current "comma delimited" format.
For those interested, the Echo Tag again is "NET_DEV".

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
=================================================================
Leeky Crockpot
Yield: 12 Servings
2 ea Leek bunches, washed and cut
4 ea Medium red or white potatos
2 cn Cream of mushroom soup
1 cn Water
1 pk Chopped mushrooms
1 cn Blue lake green beans, whole
4 ds Tabasco sauce or other hot
1 ts White pepper (black ok)
Chop all veggies roughly and add to crockpot. Now add all the cans,
using the liquid from the green beans for the can of 'water' and
adding more to make a full can. (May use fresh green beans and it's
better that way). Add the mushrooms (consider using shiitake or morels
if feeling fancy but plain will do). Add the rest and mix, then set
on low for 6 hours. Its ready but will keep on low for another 12
hours cooking time easily. Refridgerate liner at night. Freezes pretty
well in a sealed container.
From: xxcarol
Optional low-fat version, change soup to low-fat chicken broth and
add a fistful of dry 'large lima beans' (otherwise known as butter
beans).

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES

What History Doesn't Tell Us.
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
We've all heard those famous lines spoken by great heroes. Lines
like: "I have not yet begun to fight". Of course, they are inspiring
and uplifting, but a simple one line is not the whole story. What was
spoken after the famous line? Did you ever wonder??
Here's some, obviously false, information on what was "not" included
in those famous lines and words. :-))
Much of this will be of American interest, but maybe some of the
other countries will get a little fun out of this as well. :-)
John Paul Jones
John: "I have not yet begun to fight"
First Mate: Well don't you think it's about time ya did!? The bloody
ship's about had it!
James Otis
James: "Taxation without representation is tyranny."
Nude citizen holding tax statement: Taxation with representation
isn't so great either!
Abraham Lincoln
Abe: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon
this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to
the proposition that all men are created equal,"
Mae West: "Drop by and see me sometime".
Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma: Honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.
American Citizen: Dishonest differences are often a healthy sign of
Congress.

The Donkey
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
A city boy, Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an
old farmer for $100.00.
The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day
the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry son, but I have some bad news,
the donkey died."
Kenny replied, "Well then, just give me my money back." The farmer
said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already."
Kenny said, "OK then, just unload the donkey."
The farmer asked, "What ya gonna do with him?"
Kenny, "I'm going to raffle him off."
Farmer, "You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"
Kenny, "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he is dead."
A month later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "What happened
with that dead donkey?"
Kenny, "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece
and made a profit of $898.00."
Farmer, "Didn't anyone complain?"
Kenny, " Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back."
Kenny grew up and eventually became the chairman of Enron.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File
----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art

Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
