The Fidonews at a Glance
A rather slow issue once again. Top story is from Ward Dossche,
about the fidonet.ord domain. "It's alive ... it's alive ...", well
I guess you understand what it's all about.
The motorcycle trip down under, "2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U"
with David Drummond et al, continues with a report from day 2.
"Oven Beef Stew for 2" is what's cooking in our kitchen, we find
Carol behind the pots as usual.
Finally a couple of jokes from Warren Bonner. "Slow Down The Cars",
about yet another smart farmer, plus a somewhat strange one called
"Moses and the computer".

It's alive ... it's alive ... the "fidonet.org"-domain
By Ward Dossche 2:292/854
It hardly needs any comment, we all know that there's something
terribly wrong with the management of the "fidonet.org"-domain.
No need for finger-pointing or finding a scapegoat. The situation
seems to have been that former ZC/1 and IC George Peace who pulled out
of Fidonet years ago maintained the administrative and technical data
on the internet and paid the bills for keeping the domain listed.
There was a gradual loss of contact with Fidonet and as a result
several elements started to downgrade, updates did not occur. In the
same process webmasters for sites as www.fidonet.org,
www.z2.fidonet.org, etc... seemed to have been vaporised and
consequently the updating of some of these webpages is years overdue.
All that is about to come to an end.
George Peace and I reached a common understanding a while back that
the fidonet.org-domain will be transferred back inside Fidonet to a
trusted sysop, with the necessary knowledge and experience to run
things, upon recommendation by the IC. This person will be Johan
Zwiekhorst of 2:292/100 (RC29 too). He's one of the oldest surviving
sysops (old in Fido-years) and has my confidence.
There will be a transition period of course and though major portions
of fidonet.org are not up-to-date, some others such as for instance
the zone-3 portion appears to be in working order. To avoid
interruption of service it might be best that people who administer
sub-sets of the domain get in touch with Johan.
Contact with the "DNS-master" will be possible via an
echomail-conference 'FIDONET.ORG' which has already been linked to
1:140/1 (Bob Seaborn) and 2:2432/200 (Sven Dueker), hopefully from
there it will find its way to whomever needs it. Johan Zwiekhorst has
been linked too and an e-list request was sent out, so none of you
wiseguys need even try to capture it.
Let's have some fun.
Greetings from Belgium,
Ward Dossche
IC

2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U
Submitted by David Drummond, 3:640/305
Day 2 - Monday 5 August (Bunya Mts to Theodore)
Didn't hurry out of bed this morning - too cold still. Heard Rick
muttering, so thought we should stir ourselves. The wind in the night
had stopped any condensation on the fly, but my freshly oiled chain
had dropped oil on David's jacket. Oh well. Also discovered a stress
crack in our 500ml Nalgene container. I didn't think they were
supposed to ever crack? I suppose we've had it for a while ...
All bikes started okay despite the cold. We followed the road down
the mountain and fuelled up at Kumbia. After studying the maps, we
headed cross-country. I was in the lead. David said to head for
Durong South. Whenever we came to an intersection with a signpost,
that's what I did. It turns out that wasn't quite the way Rick wanted
to go, but we got there okay anyway. There were some pleasant little
dirt stretches in there.
Then we went up the seal to Mundubbera. Stopped for lunch at the
bakery, stocked up on mandarins at the supermarket and headed out on
the Coonambula Road for the shortcut to Cracow. The road became a
dirt one after a while, which wasn't too bad, then, just around a
corner, there was a gate over the road, and it was just a 2 wheel dirt
track after that. Hmm. That doesn't look right.
After a few discussions, we ended up back-tracking all the way to
Mundubbera and following the highway to Eidsvold, then on to Cracow.
Arrived at Cracow to find only Peter Allan at the campground. Stopped
for a drink and a chat. Left Rick to wait for the troupe (Ron Durkin
(RTO), Allan Miller, The Swiss, Fotofast Phil and who knows who else),
and we continued on to Theodore.
While we were fuelling up at the pumps, I was alarmed to see smoke
coming from my engine. I had an oil leak. It wasn't pouring out,
just enough to make a mess and burn off on the hot exhaust pipe. We
asked the lady about the caravan park. She suggested we just go down
to Junction Park and camp there for free. The caravan park looked a
bit like a junk yard, so we took her advice. We rode the bikes
between the bollards to camp on the grass, rather than the dirt
outside, had a hot shower in the fairly basic amenities block, washed
our clothes, then wandered up to the Theodore Hotel (a quite flash
looking joint) for a drink and a roast chicken dinner.
We were accompanied to the Hotel by a corgi-blue heeler cross, and I
dreamt that night about Rusty, the corgi we had when I was a kid.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES
=================================================================
Slow Down The Cars
By Warren Bonner, wdbonner@pacbell.net
A farmer lived on a quiet rural highway. But, as time went by, the
traffic slowly built up at an alarming rate. The traffic was so heavy
and so fast that his chickens were being run over at a rate of three
to six a day.
So one day he called the sheriff's office and said, You've got to do
something about all of these people driving so fast and killing all of
my chickens."
"What do you want me to do?" asked the sheriff.
"I don't care, just do something about those speeding drivers."
So the next day he had the county Road Team go out and put up a sign
that said:
SLOW: SCHOOL CROSSING.
Three days later the farmer called the sheriff and said, "You've got
to do something about these drivers. The 'school crossing' sign seems
to make them go faster." So, again, the sheriff sends out the county
Road Team and they put up a new sign:
SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY.
And that really sped them up. So the farmer called and called and
called everyday for three weeks. Finally, he asked the sheriff, "Your
signs are doing no good. Is it all right for me to put up my own
sign?"
The sheriff told him, "Sure thing, put up your own sign." He was going
to let the farmer do just about anything in order to have him stop
calling. Well, the sheriff got no more calls from the farmer.
Three weeks after the farmers last call, the sheriff decided to call
him. "How's the problem with those drivers. Did you put up your sign?"
"Oh, I sure did. And not one chicken has been killed since then. I've
got to go. I'm very busy." And he hung up the phone. The sheriff
thought to himself, "I'd better go to that farmer's house and look at
that sign... There might be something there that WE could use to slow
down drivers..."
So the sheriff drove out to the farmer's house, and he saw the sign.
It was a whole sheet of plywood. And written in large Yellow letters
on Black background were the words:
SLOW: NUDIST COLONY.

MOSES AND THE COMPUTER
passed on by Warren Bonner, wdbonner@pacbell.net
"Excuse me, Sir"
"Is that you again, Moses?"
"Yes, Sir. I have new computer problems, Remember those 10 things You
sent me?'
"You mean the 10 Commandments ?"
"That's it. I was wondering if they're important?'
"What do you mean 'were important' ? Of course they're important, or I
wouldn't have sent them to you".
"Well, sorry Sir, but I lost them."
"Lost them? Don't you remember I told you to save them?"
"Yes, but I forgot, but I did send some before I lost them."
"Did you hear back from any of them?"
"Well, one guy doesn't like the words "thou shalt not !" Can he change
the words a little bit?
"Yes Moses, if he doesn't change the meaning ."
"And another guy thought the word 'commandments' was too harsh. He
recommended they be called the "10 Suggestions' , or letting people
try one or two for awhile."
"Moses, I'll pretend I didn't hear that"
"I think that means 'no'. What about the guy who said I was scamming
him?"
"The term is 'spamming', Moses."
"Yeah, I e-mailed him back, and told him I don't even eat that stuff,
and I have no idea of how to send it through a computer."
"And what did he say?"
" He used your name in vain. You don't think he might have sent me one
of those, ah, plagues, or something, and that's the reason I lost
those 10 things, do You?'
"They're not plagues, they're viruses!"
"Whatever. This computer stuff is just too much for me. Can't we just
go back to those stone tablets ? They're hard on my back, taking them
out and reading them every day, but at least I never lost them."
FIDONEWS 19-38 Page 9 23 Sep 2002
"We'll do the new way, Moses!"
"I was afraid You would say that, sir."
"Moses, what did I tell you to do, if you messed up?"
"You told me to stretch out this rat toward the computer."
"It's a Mouse, Moses. MOUSE, MOUSE, MOUSE and did you do that?"
"No, I decide to try the technical support first. After all, who knows
more about this stuff than you, and I like your hours. And one other
thing. Why didn't you name them 'frogs', instead of ' mice', because
didn't you tell me that they sit on a pad?"
"I didn't name them, Moses. Man did. You can name yours 'frog' if you
want to."
"Oh, that explains it. Kind of like Adam, huh, sir?" I bet some woman
told him to call it a mouse. After all, wasn't it a woman who named
one of the computers Apple?"
"Say good night, Moses"
"Wait a minute, sir. I'm stretching out the mouse, and it seems to be
working. Yes, a couple of the 10 things came back."
Which ones, Moses?"
"Let's see. ''Thou shalt not steal from any grave an image', and 'Thou
shalt not uncover thy neighbor's wife."
"Turn off the computer, Moses. I'm sending you another set of stone
tablets."

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
