The Fidonews at a Glance
Just some 24 hours after the death of Clay Tannacore, we lost another
great Fidonet profile, Håkan Andersson. He probably was not so well
known outside of Sweden, but here he was one of the most famous and
high profiled sysops ever. Only 51 years of age, is far to soon to be
called away, and it's really hard to imagine Swedish Fidonet without
Håkan. More about this sad event in "Another big loss for Fidonet" by
Michael Cronsten.
A follow-up on last weeks articles about Clay can be found in
"FidoNews, and the tribute..." by Philip Lozier. Then Frank Vest has
some additional thoughts on this matter in "Fight-O-Net, Why it still
lives."

Another big loss for Fidonet
By Michael Cronsten, 2:205/412
Håkan Andersson, Regional Echomail Coordinator of zone 2 region 20
(Sweden) died suddenly from a heart failure on October 2nd, aged 51.
Håkan was also the webmaster of the Swedish Fidonet website
www.fidonet.pp.se as well as editor of the Swedish regional Svenska
Fidonews which was published weekly. Apart from leaving a hole in the
nodelist entry as 2:201/600 is no more, this means that the weekly and
daily upkeep of echolists and maintenance of the various robots now
have stopped. He put a lot of effort in making these things work.
Håkan first joined Fidonet in 1988, using the TCL conference system
developed by Ulf Hedlund and FrontDoor mailer made by Joaquim
Homrighausen. The greater part of the 1990s he held the office of hub
and host, and moderator of several echomail conferences.
Although I never met Håkan in person, separated by some 600 kilometers
of geography, he was of great assistance during my first months as a
Fidonet node back in 1989, always eager to help. During the following
decade and new millennium we had many contacts, as he was head of the
TCL network and distributed new versions of software made by himself
and others, and through messages in the various echoes. In later years
as Fidonet activity has shrunk, like myself he developed an interest
in web design, using html and php, on his private web site as well as
www.fidonet.pp.se and also writing php code for a daily newspaper
amongst other things.
Håkan's death was quite unexpected by both his family and the Swedish
Fidonet community. He had become an integral part of our Fidonet
everyday life, not the least by spawning new echomail threads about
the workings and doings of this regional network, and his sad demise
will likely accelerate the ensuing inactivity of Fidonet in Sweden.

GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
FidoNews, and the tribute...
By Philip Lozier, 1:267/169
I just have to say that I was very touched by this issue of FidoNews
dedicated to Clay... I am, at this point, not even reading the rest
of my mail, simply to reflect on this.
I would hope, that by some means, this issue could be sent to his
family. It is something they should not be without. Many of us devote
alot of time to this hobby of ours... some apreciate it, some wonder
why we do it... half of us fight the other half all the time for no
real good reason at all... our wives, husbands, girlfriends,
boyfriends, whatever, often joke about painting portraits of the back
of our heads... for some, it has even caused problems because of the
time we devote to it, yet we keep doing it.
With such a tribute given, his family may see just why he loved it,
fidonet... despite all of the shortcomings and personal differences
that occur, the "community" we have can band together to reflect upon
such an individual as Clay, in such a posotive way, within their
globaly distributed newsletter.
We should also take an example from him... many of the comments
described how Clay walked the middle line, and even though he may have
disagreed with an individual on one point or other, he would support
them on others, with no personal agenda or gain by it. It should be a
lesson to us all.
I think I've said all I can right now... I didn't know the man, have
had very little interaction with him, but his name was -well- known to
me as I tromped through the kennel... What I do know, is that if -all-
of us tromped through it as he did, it would be a better place.
God bless Clay Tannacore, and his family.
Many of you have touched me with the recent comments on this... In and
out of FidoNews... God bless you all too, you know who you are...
thank you... it gives me a whole new perspective on just how silly
some of the small things we juggle with, and dispute about, really
are.
Sincerely,
Philip Lozier

Fight-O-Net, Why it still lives.
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
With the recent passing of Clay Tannacore from among us and last
weeks Fidonews that was dedicated to his memory, some have commented
on how Fidonet can come together in a time like this while fighting
like, well, "dogs" the rest of the time. :) Why do we still love
Fidonet and why do we still do it. Really, this comes as no surprise
to me. Fidonet has always been this way to some degree and those that
don't know us would have a hard time understanding.
The phrase "Fight-O-Net" has been coined many times to describe,
insult, make a point and such about Fidonet. In some ways, I kinda
like the phrase. It tells a little about us;
FIGHT:
Well... Yes, we do, and, No, we don't. We argue over stuff. Just like
any family, community or group of people, we have differences. I guess
the phrase could have been "Argue-O-Net", but that don't sound right.
:-))
-O-:
Well, there has to be something to tie the phrase together. :)
Actually, this could be translated to "Oh". It reminds us that "Oh,
yes, we are a Net,family, community, group."
NET:
Yes, we are a network, but more than that, we are a network of
people, a community, family, world of our own, or whatever such
description along those lines that you might come up with.
So, we are a family, community or such that argues (fights). That's
pretty accurate. Still, there's more to it than that. Fidonet people
will argue and fight, but they will help each other just as much and
just as hard as they fight. That's a pretty positive thing when you
think about it.
Take a look at the message echos in Fidonet. In all of them you will
find people that disagree on things. Some echos get more "in to it"
than others, but the disagreements are still there. At the same time,
look closely when a person in one of those echos, or in Fidonet, needs
help, has something happen in their life (loss of a loved one) or some
such need for assistance. You will see the same people band together,
forget about the argument for the time, and offer all of the help that
they are able to offer.
Unless one is in Fidonet, one might not see this side. People
"outside" of Fidonet look at us and wonder how this little Dog that is
shrinking so much can survive? Others ask "What has Fidonet got that
the internet doesn't?"
FIDONEWS 19-41 Page 5 14 Oct 2002
My answer?... Just look around.
Join Fidonet and get to know these people. Ask one of them for help.
Read last weeks edition of the Fidonews. Search the back issues of the
Fidonews for the tribute to Doug Myers. Read some of the issues where
there was a "fight" over something. Then note the names of the people
doing the fighting and offering the tributes. Read the messages in the
echos. Note who is arguing and who offers help in times of need.
You'll soon see what Fidonet has and why this old Dog is still alive.
The same people who were arguing are the same people that offer help
in times of need.
(Ok. Move along. Nothing more to see here. Let's get back to the
battle. You've had plenty of time to sharpen your weapons.) ;-)

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
