The Fidonews at a Glance
Warren Bonner, in his column, has an anecdote called "Heaven Awaits",
and, as usual something for the jokes section, "Some Chuckles", a
collection of jokes.
"The Internet Traffic Jam" is on Frank's agenda this week.
According to this article, there may be some hope for our old doggy,
after all. For our ASCII comics section Frank made a wonderful
pictorial called "fidonet.org??". Didn't know you had that much
artistry in you, Frank, great stuff!

Heaven Awaits
wdbonner@pacbell.net
After a lifetime together the elderly couple enjoyed good
health largely because of the wife's long insistence that
they exercise and eat healthy.
But their good health did them no good when their plane
crashed on a Hawaiian vacation. They arrived at the pearly
gates and St. Peter took them to their sumptuously
appointed mansion.
"How much?" the old man asked.
"Why nothing," answered St. Peter.
"This is your reward here in heaven."
The old man looked out the window and spotted a lush
golf course.
"How much to play 18?" he asked.
"This is heaven," said St. Peter.
"It's free."
Next to the golf course the man spotted a lavish
buffet with everything from steaks to chocolate cake.
"Don't bother asking," said St. Peter. "It's heaven, it's
yours to enjoy."
The old man glanced nervously at his wife.
"Where are the low fat foods?"
St. Peter snickered.
"It's heaven. You can eat and drink whatever you
want and never get sick or fat."
Emboldened the old man continued. "No workout gym?
No blood pressure test?"
"Never again," said St. Peter.
The old man glared at his wife.
"You and your blasted bran muffins.
I could have been here twenty years ago!"
*^)
Warm regards,
Ol'wdb

The Internet Traffic Jam
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
It's been a few years since Dan Quayle invented the Internet... Umm..
well, anyway.... The Internet has been around for a few years. :-)
The Internet is supposed to be "The Information Super Highway". I
really wonder if this is true anymore? When first started, the
Internet was little more than a glorified file server. As time moved
forward and new software came to be, the Internet became easier to
use. This lead to more information being available and ease of access
to the information. The "Information Super Highway" became a reality.
As it appears today, the Internet is clogged with web pages,
newsgroups, programs, files and other stuff. Search engines that once
helped user find the information desired are now hopelessly clogged,
quivering masses of "keywords" or commercial endeavors that, for a
price, will put your page at the top of every search, even if the page
has nothing to do with what is searched for. Newsgroups that were
designed for "topical" discussions are anything but topical and the
discussions are more like battles for who can insult best. E-mail that
was supposed to provide fast, private contact with friends and family
is now the home of "get rich quick" schemes, "scams" to bilk money
from people and "Multi Level Marketing" companies who have bought
lists of "harvested" e-mail addresses from places that do nothing all
day but scan the Internet for "mail to:" links.
Somewhere between the invention of the Internet and what it has
become today, a little dog named Fido was born. The intention of this
dog was to allow Bulletin Board System to exchange message and files.
Fido was never expected to amount to much, but he surprised everyone
by growing to be the "Information Super Highway" of his time. Fido had
the ability to send messages to all parts of the world, make files and
programs available to people and give businesses a place to advertise
and provide these programs as well as other services. With over 30,000
systems world wide and each system having at least a few users, it was
easy to "reach out and touch someone". :-)
As time moved forward, Fido grew older. Not as playful as in the
past, but still faithful to his masters.... even though some of those
masters might want him "put down" due to his age. Fido is now more
content to sit at the feet of his masters and get an occasional "pat
on the head" for being there. He still does the same job as in the
past and with the help of the new connections available via DSL, cable
and other high speed services, the mail and services Fido provides
move almost as fast as the Internet mail and services.... sometimes,
faster.
I note with interest that many of the Internet Service Providers are
beginning to bundle services into packages not unlike Bulletin Boards
and Fidonet. With the current clogged search engines, spam ridden
FIDONEWS 20-06 Page 4 10 Feb 2003
newsgroups and e-mail, I wonder if Fido, and the Bulletin Boards that
he connects, might just become "The Information Super Highway" again?
It seems that Fido can provide links to programs and files from people
that desire to be helpful instead of just turning a profit. Fido can
also provide help and information from these same people and you don't
have to wonder if there is some "hard sale" or "spam' coming as a
follow up.
From this reporter's view, the "Information Super Highway" called the
Internet is fast becoming the "Information Traffic Jam". Fido and the
Bulletin Boards are one place where we can get around that "traffic
jam". :-)
Regards,
Frank Vest - 1:124/6308.1 - Sysop; Collin County Station BBS

Double Martini
A businessman entered a tavern, sat down at the bar, and ordered a
double martini on the rocks. After he finished the drink, he peeked
inside his shirt pocket, then he ordered another double martini.
After he finished that one, he again peeked inside his shirt pocket
and ordered another double martini.
Finally, the bartender said, "Look, buddy, I'll bring ya' martinis all
night long. But you gotta tell me why you look inside your shirt
pocket before you order a refill."
The customer replied, "I'm peeking at a photo of my wife. When she
starts to look good, then I know it's time to go home."

No sex since 1955
A crusty old marine corps colonel found himself at a gala event
downtown, hosted by a local liberal arts college. There was no
shortage of extremely young, idealistic ladies in attendance, one of
whom approached the colonel for conversation. She said, "Excuse me,
sir, but you seem to be a very serious man. Are you this way all the
time, or is something bothering you?"
"No," the colonel said, "just serious by nature."
The young lady looked at his awards and decorations and said, "It
looks like you have seen a lot of action."
The colonel's short reply was, "Yes, a lot of action."
The young lady, tiring of trying to start up a conversation, said,
"You know, you should lighten up a little - relax and enjoy yourself."
The colonel just stared at her in his serious manner.
Finally the young lady said, "You know, I hope you don't take this the
wrong way, but when is the last time you had sex?"
The colonel looked at her and replied, "1955."
She said, "Well there you go; you really need to chill out and quit
taking everything so seriously - I mean, no sex since 1955, isn't that
a little extreme?"
The colonel, glancing at his watch, said in his matter-of-fact voice,
"Oh, I don't know. It's only 2130 now!"

An elderly couple are sitting around one evening and the man says to
his wife, "Marsha, we are about to celebrate our 60th wedding
anniversary. We've had a wonderful life together, full of contentment
and blessings. But there's something I've always wondered about. Tell
me the truth. Have you ever been unfaithful to me?"
She hesitates a moment, then says, "Yes, three times, Sidney."
"Three times? How could that happen?" Sidney asks.
The wife begins recalling slowly, "Well, do you remember right after
we were married and we were so broke, and the bank was going to
foreclose on our little house?"
"Yes, dear, that was really a terrible time" replies the man.
Marsha continued, "And remember when I went to see the banker one
night and the next day the bank extended our loan?"
"That's hard to take" the man says, "but I guess it really was for us,
so I can forgive you. What was the second time?"
"Well," she continued, "do you remember years later when you almost
died from the heart problem because we couldn't afford the operation?"
"Yes, of course" the man replies.
"Then you will remember that right after I went to see the doctor, he
did your operation at no cost?" she explained.
"That's true" Sidney nodded. "That shocks me, Marsha, but I do
understand that you did it out of love for me, and I forgive you. So,
what was the third time?"
Marsha lowers her head and says, "Sidney, do you remember when you ran
for Country Club President and you needed 62 more votes...?"

IDIOTS
Idiot # 1
I am a medical student currently doing a rotation in toxicology at the
poison control center. Today, this woman called in very upset because
she caught her little daughter eating ants. I quickly reassured her
that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her
daughter into the hospital. She calmed down, and at the end of the
conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant
poison to eat in order to kill the ants. I told her that she better
bring her daughter into the Emergency Room right away. Here's your
dunce cap lady. Wear it with pride.
Idiot # 2
Seems that a year ago, some Boeing employees on the airfield decided
FIDONEWS 20-06 Page 8 10 Feb 2003
to steal a life raft from one of the 747s. They were successful in
getting it out of the plane and home. When they took it for a float
on the river, a Coast Guard helicopter coming towards them surprised
them. It turned out that the chopper was homing in on the emergency
locator beacon that activated when the raft was inflated. They are no
longer employed at Boeing!
Idiot # 3
A true story out of San Francisco: A man, wanting to rob a downtown
Bank of America, walked into the branch and wrote "This iz a stikkup.
Put all your muny in this bag." While standing in line, waiting to
give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen
him write the note and might call the police before he reached the
teller window. So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street
to Wells Fargo. After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his
note to the Wells Fargo teller. The teller read the note and,
surmising from his spelling errors that he wasn't the brightest light
in the harbor, told him that she could not accept his stickup note
because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip. He would
either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank
of America. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said "OK" and left. He
was arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at
Bank of America.
Idiot # 4
A motorist was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap that
measured his speed using radar and photographed his car. He later
received in the mail: a ticket for $40 and a photo of his car.
Instead of payment, he sent the police department a photograph of
$40. Several days later, he received a letter from the police that
contained another picture, this time of handcuffs. He immediately
mailed in his $40!
Idiot # 5
A Guy walked into a little corner store with a shotgun and demanded
all the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in
a bag, the robber saw a bottle of scotch that he wanted behind the
counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as
well. The cashier refused and said, "I don't believe you are over
21." The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to
him because he didn't believe him. At this point the robber took his
driver's license out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk. The clerk
looked it over, and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and he
put the scotch in the bag. The robber then ran from the Bank with his
loot. The cashier promptly called the police and gave the name and
address of the robber that he got off the license. They arrested the
robber two hours later.
Idiot # 6
A pair of Michigan robbers entered a record shop nervously waving
revolvers. The first one shouted "Nobody move!" When his partner
moved, the startled first bandit shot him.
Idiot # 7
Arkansas: Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided
that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window,
FIDONEWS 20-06 Page 9 10 Feb 2003
grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it
over his head at the window. The cinder block bounced back and hit
the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. Seems the
liquor store window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught
on videotape. (Oh, that smarts.)
Idiot # 8
Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a
man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 12:50 AM,
flashed a gun and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he
said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When
the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for
breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away.
Conclusion: "Several recent studies have shown that one in every four
people in the world, suffers from some form of mental disorder. Think
about that, if three of your friends seem normal, then you must be the
one."
That's all this week!

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
