The Fidonews at a Glance
In the net news section there is a "Net382 Meeting" notice. Sorry
Frank, but I think I'll have to take a raincheck on that one, but I
hope plenty will show up.
Some software reviews, rather rare nowadays, and suddenly we got
two at the same time. Well, I must admit to a little cheating, since
"Windows 9x/ME Desktop Wallpaper Changer" by Ben Ritchey is not really
a fidonet software review, but I squeezed it into this section anyway.
"Free Customized Windows BBS Terminal Program" by Ed Williams is more
along the fidonet vein.
Warren Bonner does some "Ramblings of an Old Man", or rather, it
seems, ramblings of an old man over ramblings of an old man, in his
column this week. I just hope this will not start another round of
that 'We helped you out! -- Did not! -- Did too!' that we've seen far
too much of around fido echoes.
A fidonet notice from Ward Dossche, "FTSC-Chair election /
Announcement of candidates".
In Frank's column we can read something for those that don't like
the contents of the Snooze, among other things. This in "Take it up
with the management." Also from Frank, "Fidodog" goes Superman on us
in another ASCII comix.
A couple of jokes concludes the contributions this week. They are
"Grandparents", a kiddy joke from Warren and "THREE TEXAS SURGEONS", a
rather nasty one about a certain Texas cowboy, from Ward.

Windows 9x/ME Desktop Wallpaper Changer
By Ben Ritchey
<FIDONet@Bellsouth.net>
Note: This was in response to a request for free software that allows
rotation of the Windows Desktop (Wallpaper) in Win9x/ME ...
I use a custom procedure I designed myself plus two utilities (Random
Copy to randomly select a new picture each boot, and PV to convert
images (RC is Freeware, PV is Free for Personal use only). My
PickAPic.Bat procedure is Public Domain Freeware by virtue of this
post <g>.
Just place all your pictures in thier own sub-directory (I used
C:\PICS.RC), move all the files in my archive to this same sub-dir,
then read the REM comments in file PICKAPIC.BAT for complete install
and configuration instructions.
Default re-size for PV/pic is 1024 (1024x768) but is quite easy to
change and should match your default screen setting under Windows (X
axis). I ONLY re-size the X-axis in order to preserve the aspect ratio
(so globes don't get stretched to egg shape, i.e. the Y-axis re-sizes
automagically).
Additional graphics file types can be added to the RC line, just
insert along with existing gif/jpg using the same syntax (" *.tif" for
example).
After Windows *finishes* booting, file RC-1.LOG contains the name of
the current picture displayed (I also keep *.Txt files with a
description of each picture).
As always, the archive can be requested via my E-mail robot (iRex):
To: FIDONet(at)Bellsouth(dot)net
Subj: FREQ
Body: FREQ PICKAPIC.ZIP
This archive is 137kB in size and contains everything you need to
implement the PickAPic procedure.
If you'd rather not use the FReq 'bot, here's the procedure (includes
web page URLs for both utilities) with quick instructions:

Free Customized Windows BBS Terminal Program
by Ed Williams, 1:128/148
info@goblinsreach.org
PeopleComm Floppy Disk Version 1.01a is finally out of beta testing
and is ready to be released. PeopleComm is a freeware program that
allows people to call and use BBS's. This program has several
wonderful features:
FREE!!!
Works on Telnet or Dialup!
Created for FIDONET BBS's ONLY!
Customized for your NET or REGION FOR FREE!
Works under Win95+, including XP.
Works on Serial or WinModems.
The only needed to configure is the phone/telnet numbers!
No messy port selections, irq settings, baud rate questions!
Supports ZModem download and BBS Ansi graphics.
Auto-ZModem Detect!
Installs from a SETUP.EXE file!
Able to Install/Uninstall from Windows!
Supports Restricted Telnet addresses!
PeopleComm's EXE Fit's on a FLOPPY! And needs no Setup to run!
The Setup program put's an icon on the desktop and in All Programs!
This program was written to allow sysop's to easily get users back on
their BBS's. This program, requires only ONE file to run, that is the
executable file. A setup.exe file will fit on a floppy as well, and
leaves about 600K extra space for your own files, plus it does all the
stuff users expect from windows programs (install/uninstall).
It's so easy to run it's scary! After startup, simply select
Telephone or Telnet connection and check the Phone Number or Telnet
Numbers and you're online!
BUT, as it's a FIDONET ONLY BBS Dialer, there is no way to add any
BBS's to the list it comes with. That ability will come with a future
and much more enhanced (but it won't fit on a floppy) version of
PeopleComm. SO What do you do to get your BBS Listed???
Simple! Any RC or NC can request a customized copy for their regions
free of charge. Information will be sent to them upon request as to
what information is needed on the BBS's to be added for your area.
Once that information is received, it will be added and a customized
version will be sent to your RC/NC.
The standards for this program were that it be all contained in one
executable file, and that it fit on a floppy. That a setup.exe be
created that would allow for easy installation into windows. That it
allow for the user to change/modify Download/Upload directories,
telnet addresses, and phone numbers to their liking. That it provide
some information about that BBS within the program itself. It has met
these requirements.
As the author of this version of PeopleComm, I want to assure you that
the ONLY reason I'm doing this is because I loved doing it, and that I
FIDONEWS 20-09 Page 8 3 Mar 2003
love and support Fidonet. I believe in getting programmers back into
Fidonet, and I believe that we can do so much more than we're doing
now. By encouraging Nets and Regions to work together to make their
own version I feel we will grow as a Net. By restricting the program
to Fidonet BBS's, I feel we will encourage growth within fidonet, and
hopefully a return to actual BBS's being in the nodelist. And lastly,
by making it customizeable by geography, I feel it will engender a
sense of community among Sysops, as well as callers.
If you're interested in programming, are good at creating standards,
enjoy doing artwork, and would like to contribute to the
CD/Downloadable version of PeopleComm, please check out
www.peoplecomm.org or write info@goblinsreach.org
You may freq a Region 15 version of this program from here with the
magic name PCOMM at 1:128/148, or IREX request at
goblinsreach.dnsalias.org.
You may also download it off the Internet at www.peoplecomm.org
Enjoy!

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
Ramblings of an Old Man
wdbonner@pacbell.net
If you aren't interested in the ramblings of an old man, please delete
now. If you're still there, pull up a chair and listen. Lately
Americans have been mud balled by every country we have assisted in
the last hundred years. Even in Fidonews the IC has denounced America,
which was good enough for him when he lived in the state of Montana in
his childhood according to netmail I enjoyed from him when I was
Fidonews editor. Many other Euro voices have acquired the same
attitude. As an American I am very surprised at this as I thought we
were allies, great friends, ready to help each other in times of need.
I found this item in my email box, and thought it appropriate to
remind my Euro-friends of America's generosity, not our occupation of
their countries.
Ramblings of An Old Man
Is there anyone else out there who's sick and tired of all the polls
being taken in foreign countries as to whether or not they "like" us?
The last time I looked, the word "like" had nothing to do with foreign
policy. I prefer 'respect' or 'fear' They worked for Rome, which
civilized and kept the peace in the known world a hell of a lot longer
than our puny two centuries-plus.
I see a left-wing German got elected to office recently by campaigning
against the foreign policy of the United States. Yeah, hat's what I
want, to be lectured about war and being a "good neighbor" by a
German. Their head honcho said they wouldn't take part in a war
against Iraq. Kind of nice to see them taking a pass on a war once in
while. Perhaps we needed to have the word "World" in front of War. I
think it's time to bring our boys home from Germany. Outside of the
money we'd save, we'd make the Germans "like" us a lot more, after
they started paying the bills for their own defense.
Last time I checked, France isn't too fond of us either. They sort of
liked us back on June 6th, 1944, though, didn't they? If you don't
think so, see how nicely they take care of the enormous American
cemeteries up above the Normandy beaches. For those of you who've
studied history, we also have a few cemeteries in places like Belleau
Woods and Chateau Thierry also. For those of you who haven't studied
it that was from World War One the first time Europe screwed up and we
bailed out the French. That's where the US Marines got the title
'Devil Dogs' or, if you still care about what the Germans think,
Teufelhunde." I hope I spelled that right; sure wouldn't want to
offend anyone, least of all a German.
Come to think of it, when Europe couldn't take care of their Bosnian
problem recently, guess who had to help out there also. Last time I
checked, our kids are still there. I sort of remember they said they
would be out in a year. Gee, how time flies when you're having fun.
FIDONEWS 20-09 Page 10 3 Mar 2003
Now we hear that the South Koreans aren't too happy with us either.
They "liked" us a lot better, of course, in June 1950. It took more
than 50,000 Americans killed in Korea to help give them the lifestyle
they currently enjoy, but then who's counting? I think it's also time
to bring the boys home from there. There are about 37,000 young
Americans on the DMZ separating the South Koreans from their
"brothers" up north. Maybe if we leave, they can begin to participate
in the "good life" that North Korea currently enjoys. Uh huh. Sure.
I also understand that a good portion of the Arab/Moslem world now
doesn't "like" us either. Did anyone ever sit down and determine what
we would have to do to get them to like us? Ask them what they would
like us to do. Die? Commit ritual suicide? Bend over?
Maybe we should follow the advice of our dimwitted, dullest knife in
the drawer, Senator Patty Murray, and build more roads, hospitals, day
care centers, and orphanages like Osama bin Laden does. What with all
the orphans Osama has created, the least he can do is build some
places to put them. Senator Stupid says if we would only "emulate"
Osama, the Arab world would love us. Sorry Patty, in addition to the
fact that we already do all of those things around the world and have
been doing them for over sixty years, I don't take public
transportation, and I certainly wouldn't take it with a bomb strapped
to the guy next to me.
Don't get me wrong: I'm not in favor of going to war. Been there, done
that. Several times, in fact. But I think we ought to have some polls
in this country about other countries, and see if we "like" THEM.
Problem is, if you listed the countries, not only wouldn't the average
American know if he liked them or not, he wouldn't be able to find
them.
If we're supposed to worry about them, how about them worrying about
us? We were nice to the North Koreans in 1994, as we followed the
policies of Neville Clinton. And it seemed to work; they didn't
restart nuclear weapons program for a whole year or so. In the
meantime, we fed them when they were starving, and put oil in their
stoves when they were freezing.
In a recent visit to Norway, I engaged in a really fun debate with my
cousin's son, a student at a Norwegian University. I was lectured to
by this thankless squirt about the American "Empire," and scolded
about dropping the atomic bomb on the Japanese. I reminded him that
empires usually keep the stuff they take; we don't, and back in 1945
most Norwegians thought dropping ANY kind of bomb on Germany or Japan
was a good idea.
I also reminded him that my uncle, his grandfather, and others in our
family spent a significant time in Sachsenhausen concentration camp,
courtesy of the Germans, and they didn't all survive. I further
reminded him that if it weren't for the "American Empire" he would
probably be speaking German or Russian.
Sorry about the rambling. Provided by Joe Galloway, author of "We Were
Soldiers".

FTSC-Chair election / Announcement of candidates
By Ward Dossche - 2:292/854
The period of nominations in the election of the FTSC-chair has come
to an end. No new nominations were received.
There is only 1 candidate: Scott Little.
Since there are no provisions in the election-procedure of how to
proceed if there is only one candidate, the voting has now commenced.
I need to point out that:
1) Only standing FTSC-members are entitled to vote;
2) A successful candidate must receive approval by at least a
plurality of votes, so please those entitled to vote: do so!
For a definition of "plurality" read FTA1001.
I will accept votes via netmail but also via email at 'wd@skynet.be'
which is my personal email-address. All votes will be checked for
confirmation; unconfirmed votes will be rejected.
Deadline for voting: March 10th 2003 at 00h01am my time.
The outcome of the election will be announced in FTSC_PUBLIC, Fidonews
and every other usefull means on March 10th 2003. There will be a
period of three weeks to enter complaints. If complaints are
formulated they will be collected by an overseer, for independant
processing.
Appointment of the FTSC-administrator will then occur on March 30th
2003. This appointment will expire on March 30th 2007.

FRANK'S COLUMN - FRANK VEST
=================================================================
Take it up with the management.
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
I'd like to be "up beat" and tell tales of happiness. That, however,
is hard to do these days. The world is simply not a happy place. As I
look around, I see wars, rumors of war, people that argue for the sake
of arguing.
There's currently an argument in the Fidonews echo about what nation
did what to who and how much dislike, envy, hatred and grief each
feels for the other. Maybe this doesn't, or shouldn't, belong in the
Fidonews echo.... on the other hand, if one looks around Fidonet these
days, one finds the same thing in other echos. It might not be about
different countries, nations, powers or such, but the arguments are
the same. It seems that there is always some person, group or some
such that is arguing about something in, about, or to do with Fidonet.
As I sit here typing this column, I think back on articles from past
Fidonews editions. I realize that this arguing is not new. Many of the
past editions have the same arguments in them. What does strike me as
new is that these arguments seem to be the norm now. I'm wondering if
this is because of the condition of the world or the condition of
Fidonet only? Perhaps a bit of both??
What has happened to Fidonet? Is it simply that the dwindling numbers
in Fidonet has left us with only combatants. That is; Is there no one
left that is producing new software or working on other advancements
for Fidonet?
I'd like to take this opportunity in my column to challenge the
Fidonet software authors that are still active to write an article on
any advancements that they are making on their Fidonet software.
I'd like to also challenge the remaining Sysops and Users to write
articles about something other than war, arguments and fighting. As
I said as Fidonews Editor, and as the current Fidonews Editor says:
"The Fidonews is what /YOU/ make of it!". This applies to the Fidonews
echo as well as the Fidonews publication.
Are you up to the challenge??

Grandparents
(Retirement in the eyes of a child)
wdbonner@pacbell.net
After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their
holiday away from school. One child wrote the following:
We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa.
They used to live in a big brick house but Grandpa got retarded and
they moved to Arizona.
Now they live in a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like
grass.
They ride around on their bicycles and wear name tags because they
don't know who they are anymore. They go to a building called a
wrecked center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay
now. They play games and do exercises there, but they don't do them
very well.
There is a swimming pool too, but in it, they all jump up and down
with hats on, while they talk to each other. I guess they don't know
how to swim. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old
man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes
they sneak out. in their golf carts. Nobody there cooks, they just
eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night---"early birds".
Some of the people can't get out past the man in the doll house. The
ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center and call it
pot luck.
My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his
retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday
too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll
house. Then I will let people out so they can visit their
grandchildren.
Warm Regards,
Ol'wdb

THREE TEXAS SURGEONS
Ward Dossche / 2:292/854
Three Texas surgeons were arguing as to which had the greatest skill.
The first began: "Three years ago, I reattached seven fingers on a
pianist. He went on to give a recital for the Queen of England."
The second replied: "That's nothing. I attended a man in a car
accident.. All his arms and legs were severed from his body. Two years
after I reattached them, he won three gold medals for field events in
the Olympics."
The third said: "A few years back, I attended to a cowboy. He was high
on cocaine and alcohol when he rode his horse head-on into a Santa Fe
freight train traveling at 100 miles per hour. All I had to work with
was the horse's ass and a ten gallon hat. Two years ago he became
president of the United States."

FIDONEWS INFORMATION

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
