Funny Bit of History
wdbonner@pacbell.net
Cannon Balls. We must keep history alive!!!!
In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many
freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannon fired
round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a
good supply near the cannon. But how to prevent them
from rolling about the deck?
The best storage method devised was a square based
pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four, resting
on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30
cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next
to the cannon.
There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom
layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The
solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with 16
round indentations. But if this plate were made of iron,
the iron balls would quickly rust to the iron plate in the
salt spray that conered the ship at times.
The solution to the rusting problem was to make
"Brass Monkeys." Few landlubbers realize that brass
contracts much more and much faster than iron when
chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped
too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much
that the iron cannon balls would come right off the
monkey, rolling all over the deck of the ship.
Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the
balls off a brass monkey!" (And all this time, you thought
that was an improper _expression, didn't you?) Later
ship builders devised a "V" shaped ball trough which
was elevated a foot on the far end from the cannon. The
cannon balls would roll by gravity down as the ball next
to the cannon was removed.
And read a more modern lifestyle:
1) Life isn't like a box of chocolates, it's more like a jar
of jalapeqos -- you never know if it's going to burn you.
2) I love deadlines. I especially like the Whooshing
sound they make as they go flying by.
3) Tell me what you need, and I'll tell you how to get
along without it.
4) Needing someone is like needing a parachute.
If they aren't there the first time, chances are you
FIDONEWS 20-23 Page 3 9 Jun 2003
won't be needing them again.
5) I don't have an attitude problem, you have a
perception problem.
6) Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars
in the sky and I thought to myself, where the hell
is the ceiling?
7) My reality check bounced.
8) On the keyboard of life, always keep one finger
on the escape key.
9) I don't suffer from stress. I am a carrier!
10) You are slower than a herd of turtles stampeding
through peanut butter.
11) Everyone is someone else's weirdo.
12) Never argue with an idiot.. They drag you down
to their level then beat you with experience.
13) Be careful . . . a pat on the back is only a few
centimeters from a kick in the butt.
14) Don't be irreplaceable - if you can't be replaced,
you won't be promoted.
15) The more stuff you put up with, the more stuff
you are going to get.
16) You can go anywhere you want if you look serious
and carry a clipboard.
17) So this isn't Home Sweet Home . . . Adjust!
18) Ring bell for maid service. If no answer, do it
yourself!
19) I came, I saw, I decided to order take out.
20) Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for
they shall never cease to be amused.
21) I'd live life in the fast lane, but I am married to a
speed bump.
22) Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny.
23) What should you give a man who has everything?
A woman to show him how to work it!
24) How can you tell which bottle contains her PMS
medicine? It's the one with bite marks on the cap!

HUMOUR IN A FIDO VEIN
=================================================================
You might be addicted to Fidonet if...
sent by Petko Bossakov (2:350/5)
Greetings, my fellow sysops and users!
Being concerned for your mental health, I would like to assemble a
short list of warning signs that show that you've been having a bit
much of Fidonet communication lately.
If you've experienced at least three or four of these situations, I'd
suggest that you seek professional counselling.
You might be addicted to Fidonet if...
You wake up at 4:20 a.m. to go to the bathroom and stop to check your
netmail on the way back to bed.
You use the phrase "2400-baud modem" as an insult.
You turn off your modem and get this awful empty feeling, like you
just pulled the plug on a loved one.
You name your dog Fido.
You name your cat Fido.
You name your child Fido.
You start using smileys in your snail mail.
Your hard drive crashes. You haven't logged in for a whole two hours.
You start to twitch.
You pick up the phone and manually dial your BBS. You try to whistle
to communicate with the modem and you succeed.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
