The Fall of Fidonet BBSing
With the internet becomming as popular as it has, BBS's need
to work harder than ever to get users that will log in, and keep
comming back. The original idea of a Telnet'able BBS, while still
good, seems to be loosing favor against those who have a Web interface
to their BBS. And even they need to do all sorts of things they never
used to have to do. Many SysOps, it seems, are just giving up. When I
first joined FidoNet, The nodelist was over 1 MB when COMPRESSED. I
will grant you that it was still ARC compression, but the point is
that it was over 1MB compressed. Now, the nodelist is not even 1MB
UNcompressed. This, to me represents the fact that there is a growing
threat to traditional BBS's of extinction.
My thoughts are frequently turning to what we, as Fidonet
SysOps can do to keep people comming to our BBS's, and/or to get new
users. We have to do something, or else it will not be more than a few
more years, 10-15 at best, before BBSs, and even Fidonet, cease to
exist.
Think back to the old times. Once, every major company had a
BBS that they could direct customers to for obtaining product updates,
new drivers, etc...
Now, they are telling everyone to go to their Web site! People
used to log into BBS's to communicate, to relax, etc.. Now people are
turning to E-Mail for communications, and MultiPlayer games like
Diablo, Warcraft, etc... for their entertainment.
Don't get me wrong. I think the Internet is a wonderful idea.
But I still feel there is a place in the world for us "Old timers"
that run a traditional style BBS. Some of us don't even have a dialup
line. I, for example, am the sysop of an IP ONLY BBS. I have 0 modems
connected to the computer running my system. It's all Telnet/Ftp/WWW
connections. I belive that being on the internet is the only way BBSs
will survive in the long run, especially in first world countries like
the USA, England, Japan, etc..
I want to put out a challenge to *ALL* Fidonet SysOps. Let us
unite in combat of this threat. IF it is the fate of BBSs to fade from
existance, and I am not convinced of that yet, let us at least go out
with a fight. The FidoNews would be an ideal place, I feel, to start
discussions of how to do this. At least till we can get an echo area
for this. There must be some method of attracting users to a BBS.
So, how about it Fido? Are we going to just sit and die? Or
are we going to fight?
I have started an echo on the NAB. The echo tag is
"BBS_SURVIVAL". Request it from your uplink, or from me directly (I'm
happy to provide to binkp and/or rawd compatable nodes). There we can
discuss the problem and try to come up with a solution.

LAST ARTICLE

Well fido folks, the time has come for Ol'wdb to hang up the Fidonet
ex-ed's apron. At 78 years young, my load is heavy, and I must
lighten it. Doctors say that I must limit my time on the computer or
lose my eyesight.
Being an author of WWII histories has always been my driving force.
Fidonews was my hobby. Now I must not aggravate the condition age has
impressed upon my eyes. I am leaving Fidonews today, in order to
finish the last chapter of the book I'm writing now.
I will be peeping in on Mondays to see the Fidonews, that 15 minutes
is permitted by Dr. Burger. Every 3 days I can look through the
echoes for a few minutes if I adhere to the warnings of my eyes.
"DON'T READ when print changes colors or starts to float".
I have enjoyed everyone of you during my 15 Fido years. Come to think
of it, that is a pretty full Fido life! I have learned to respect
others, after getting hit many times. ;-))
Many thanks for your friendships and time.
God Bless,
Ol'wdb

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
Andy Rooney's Philosophy and MINE too!
wdbonner@pacbell.net
I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia,
it is an opinion. I don't think being a minority makes you a victim
of anything except numbers.
The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are
things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black
Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America.
Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud
Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America and
see what happens. Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.
When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70%
of the population is black, that is not racial profiling, it is the
law of statistics.
I believe that if you are selling me a milk shake, a pack of
cigarettes, a newspaper, or a hotel room, you must do it in English.
As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen you should
speak English. My father and grandfather shouldn't have to die in vain
so you can leave the countries you were born in, to come over and
disrespect ours, or make our country feel like your ex-country.
I think the police should have every right to shoot you if you
threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the
word "freeze" or "stop" in English, see the above lines.
I feel much safer letting a machine with no political affiliation
recount votes when needed. I don't think just because you were not
born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs,
government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks etc., so you can open a
hotel, coffee shop, trinket store, or any other business.
I believe a self-righteous liberal or conservative with a cause is
more dangerous than a Hell's Angel with an attitude.
I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and
continue to make more. If it ticks you off, go and invent the next
operating system that's better and put your name on the building. Ask
your buddy that invented the Internet to help you.
It doesn't take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does
take a parent to stand up to the kid and smack his little ass when
necessary and say "NO".
I am sick of "Political Correctness" and of all the suck ups that go
along with it. I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of
them was born in Africa, so how can they be "African-Americans"?
Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a
FIDONEWS 20-28 Page 6 14 Jul 2003
European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great
grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere
else.
And if you don't like my point of view, tough!
><><
Warm Regards,
Ol'wdb

"MY CUP"
wdbonner@pacbell.net
I've never made a fortune,
and it's probably too late now.
But I don't worry about that much,
I'm happy anyhow.
And as I go along life's way,
I'm reaping better than I sowed.
I'm drinking from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed.
Haven't got a lot of riches,
and sometimes the going's tough.
But I've got loving ones all around me,
and that makes me rich enough.
I thank God for his blessings,
and the mercies He's bestowed.
I'm drinking from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed.
I remember times when things went wrong,
My faith wore somewhat thin.
But all at once the dark clouds broke,
and the sun peeped through again.
So Lord, help me not to gripe,
about the tough rows I have hoed.
I'm drinking from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed.
If God gives me strength and courage,
When the way grows steep and rough.
I'll not ask for other blessings,
I'm already blessed enough.
And may I never be too busy,
to help others bear their loads.
Then I'll keep drinking from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed.
A beautiful poem, author unknown

SOME FUNNIES FER YA
wdbonner@pacbell.net
President Clinton got together with some of his golf buddies
for a round. When they got ready to tee off on hole number
one, Clinton removed his golf jacket and revealed that he had
a pair of panties stuck to his upper left arm.
Nobody in the group had enough nerve to ask about it, so they
played their eighteen holes as usual.
When the game was completed, and drinks were flowing
profusely at the "19th hole," one of the group got enough Jack
Daniels courage and asked, "Mr. President, what's the story
on those panties you have stuck to your left arm?"
Clinton replied, "It's a patch ... I'm trying to quit."

COP
There was a City cop on his horse waiting to cross the street when
a little boy on his new shiny bike stopped beside him.
"Nice bike," the cop said "Did Santa bring it to you?"
"Yep," the little boy said, "He sure did!" The cop looked the bike
over and handed the boy a $20 ticket for a safety violation.
The cop said, "Next year tell Santa to put reflector light on the
back of it."
The young boy looked up at the cop and said
"Nice horse you got there sir, did Santa bring it to you?"
"Yes, he sure did," chuckled the cop.
The little boy looked up at the cop and said, "Next year tell Santa
the dick goes underneath the horse - not on top."

Forest Gump In Heaven
The day finally arrived: Forest Gump dies and goes to Heaven.
He is at the Pearly Gates, met by St. Peter himself. However, the
gates are closed and Forest approaches the Gatekeeper.
St. Peter says, "Well, Forest, it's certainly good to see you. We
have heard a lot about you. I must tell you, though, that the place
is filling up fast, and we've been administering an entrance
examination for everyone. The test is short, but you have to pass it
before you can get into Heaven.
FIDONEWS 20-28 Page 9 14 Jul 2003
Forest responds, "It sure is good to be here St.. Peter, sir. But
nobody ever told me about any entrance exam. sure hope the test
isn't too hard; life was a big enough test as it was."
St. Peter goes on, "Yes, I know, Forest, but the test is only three
questions.
First: What two days of the week begin with the letter T?
Second: How many seconds are there in a year?
Third: What is God's first name?"
Forest leaves to think the questions over. He returns the next day
and sees St. Peter who waves him up and says, "Now that you have
had a chance to think the questions over, tell me your answers."
Forest says, "Well, the first one -- which two days in the week begin
with the letter ''T?" Shucks, that one's easy. That'd be Today and
Tomorrow."
The Saint's eyes open wide and he exclaims, "Forest, that's not what
I was thinking, but you do have a point, and I guess I didn't
specify, so I'll give you credit for that answer.
How about the next one?" asks St. Peter. "How many seconds in a
year?"
"Twelve." Said Forest
Astounded, St. Peter says, "Twelve? Twelve!? Forest, how in
Heaven's name could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?"
Forest says "Shucks, there's got to be twelve: January 2nd,
February 2nd, March 2nd..."
"Hold it, " interrupts St. Peter. "I see where you're going with
this, and I see your point, though that wasn't quite what I had in
mind,
.....but I'll have to give you credit for that one, too. Let's go
on with the third and final question. Can you tell me God's first
name"?
"Sure" Forest replied, "its Andy."
Andy?!" exclaimed an exasperated and frustrated St. Peter. "Ok, I
can understand how you came up with your answers to my first two
questions, but just how in the world did you come up with the name
Andy as the first name of God?"
"Shucks, that was the easiest one of all," Forest replied. "I learnt
it from the song..."ANDY WALKS WITH ME, ANDY TALKS WITH ME, ANDY
TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN. . . ."
St. Peter opened the Pearly Gates and said: "Run Forest, run".
Have a heavenly day! :)

The patient wakes up in a private room at the hospital. The phone
FIDONEWS 20-28 Page 10 14 Jul 2003
by his bed rings. "This is your doctor calling.
We have the results back from the lab. I'm sorry to report that you
have an extremely contagious deadly disease known as G.A.S.H."
"G.A.S.H?" replies the man. "What in the hell is G.A.S.H.?"
"It's a combination of Gonorrhea, AIDS, SARS, and Herpes,"
explains the doctor.
"My God!" screams the man in a panic, "what are we going to do?"
"We're going to keep you in isolation and give you a strict diet of
pizza, pancakes, quesadillas, and pita bread," says the doctor.
"Will that cure me, asked the patient?"
"No, says Doctor, but it's the only food that will fit under the
door."
Grin, that's all this time.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
