International cooking, Mach3 jets and snow
I think it's wonderful, that our revived International Kitchen column
seems to have been appreciated by most of our readers.
Of course there will always be bigots that regard everything
foreign as something worse than what the cat dragged home, but this
narrow minded attitude, usually living next door to racism,
fortunately is more the exception than the usual in Fidonet nowadays.
Most Fidonet users seem to be more universal citizens than ditto of a
certain country, and the narrow minded, fanatical chauvinism, that
makes a few people confuse criticism with hatred, can easily be
disposed of with the <next> key in our readers.
Not the least discouraged by some, not so nice, comments in the
echo, that goes along with the Snooze ezine, I this week will teach
you how to make another Swedish specialty -- Janssons frestelse
(Jansson's Temptation). In last week's Swedish Meatball recipe, one of
our sharp-eyed readers, Matt McCarthy, pointed out to me that I forgot
to list the butter (50g or three tablespoons -- the amount not
critical at all). I sure hope I will remember all ingredients this
time; after all, they are rather few this week too.
Another thing, that was discussed in the echo after last week's
recipe, was how to convert from that strange measuring system that the
US still insists on using, to the one that most of the rest of the
world uses, the metric system. Frank Vest was kind enough to provide
us with a rather comprehensive conversation table, that you'll also
find in this week's International Kitchen column.
* * *
It also seems like my editorial remark last week, about how long it
takes to grow a beard, created responses almost similar to what a
claim like 'my d*ck is bigger than yours' could have created. Some
readers of ours obviously can grow beards at least as big as that Arab
guy, they picked up from the spider hole, is supposed to have grown in
less than a year, so I obviously have to back off from my claim from
last week, that it'll take several years to grow a curly beard that
big.
But at least my beard claim managed to arouse quite some comments
in the FIDONEWS echo, where everyone of our readers are welcome to
comment on any of the articles in the Snooze, so I guess controversial
editorials aren't all bad after all?

Philip Lozier is back with his popular BBS software news column. I
hope that the word can be spread, so that those that still develop
software for the Fidonet will remember to send a reminder to Phil.
This column of his really is a major contribution to the Snooze, so I
FIDONEWS 20-51 Page 3 22 Dec 2003
hope Phil will not be discouraged, in the future, by lack of feedback.
Phil also sent in an article about a BBS documentary being
recorded. Now tell me, does this sound exciting or not? We sure want
to hear more about this project, Phil, don't you dare leave us in the
dark, now that you've managed to raise our curiosity! :)
* * *
As could be expected, this week of the Wright Bros. centennial,
lots of TV programs about flight were broadcast, at least here in
Sweden. One interesting show I saw on the Discovery Channel, was about
private jets and how much time, and even life quality, they could give
the "customers". When I saw it I could not help wondering why noone
yet has tried to scale down the Concorde to something like one to
four, yielding a private jet for some 20 passengers with a Mach3
capacity. The blueprints should be available for a really low price.
But then, I'm not in the position to invest the milliards of
neither dollars nor euros to finance such an adventure, so I'll donate
the idea to the Public Domain, just as I've done with almost every
other idea (transformed into programs) that I've come up with during
my 15 years in Fidonet.

At the moment we're riding out a blizzard here in Göteborg, Sweden.
Or at least that's what they said we would be doing, in the forecast
yesterday, and even late this afternoon. They even compared it to "The
Big Blizzard" of November 17th 1995, when 80% of the Swedish
population where affected. But so far it's not even far from what it
was that day, so I hope we'll not be isolated from the outside world
when I wake up tomorrow. Kyoto anyone...?

"BBS: The Documentary" - Progress Continues!
submitted by: Philip Lozier 1:267/169
For some time now, an individual named Jason Scott has been working on
a "BBS Documentary" series aimed at portraying the history of the BBS
through the eyes of those who lived it, as well as those who pioneered
the technology. It is planned to be a seven episode video series on 2
DVD's, with release planned for some time in 2004.
To date, over 202 hours of video have been shot, and 170 interviews,
(with 30 more planned), conducted. While there are still some
interviews on the schedule, Jason has reported that the editing
process has begun at this point.
Obviously his documentary is being taken very seriously, as two
noteworthy people who have granted him interviews for this project are
Ward Christensen (co-inventor of the BBS and original programmer of
XMODEM), and Dr. Vinton Cerf (co-engineer of TCP/IP), known to some as
the "Father Of The Internet".
While I can't currently locate the list of interviews at this visit to
his site, I do remember sometime back seeing the list, and there were
various software developers, BBS SysOps of past and present, and (as
he puts it) the "regular folk" who have had BBSing in some way make an
impression on their lives.
If this is something you find of interest, I would highly suggest a
visit to his site at http://www.bbsdocumentary.com for a look around.
Jason has done quite a bit of research in the few years he has been
working on this and has put together an interesting timeline of BBS
history, as well as the largest database known about every known BBS
package ever to exist.
I can't wait until the final cut is available :) It is sure to be
quite interesting.

*** New release of "The Magic Oracle" DoorGame ***
14-Dec-2003
Sean Dennis has announced a new release of his doorgame... following
is his announcement:
I've released what I hope to be the last version of my door, "The
Magic Oracle". It's now at version 7.2. What is it? Well, if you've
ever used the Magic 8-Ball(tm), you know what TMO is, but it's
completely customizable by the sysop. Some of its features:
* No ANSI.SYS needed (has built-in ANSI emulation)
* Supports unlimited comports and nodes
* Supports DOOR.SYS and DORINFO#.DAT
* Will run on any system that supports DOS doors
* Pipe codes are supported
If you'd like to grab it, go to:
http://cheepware.midnightshour.org
and it's there on the page. Also, you may want to try an email FREQ
for TMO72DOS.ZIP at midnite1@mchsi.com.

There doesn't seem to be much in the line of FidoNet Software
development news going on "at the moment", but I would like to hope
that will not the case somewhere soon down the line. Let's all
remember, as FidoNet "SysOps", that FidoNet gained the popularity of
its heyday through the BBS. Fot those of us who run a BBS that
provides FidoNet, I hope we continue to remember this, and strive to
bring back what we once had. Attracting more users to our BBS's can
ultimately bring the same results as it once did, attracting more
people to want to provide public BBS systems with FidoNet available.
If interest were to rise again, I bet we sure -would- be reading about
more "FidoNet" software development news :)
"Today's BBS users, are tommorows SysOps" I heard somewhere. Let's go
fishing! :)

It's fun to see recipes in the Fidonews. We are, after all, people
and we do eat wherever we happen to be. The recipe by Björn last week
and the resulting chatter over the ingredients (or missing one) has
been interesting. I don't have a recipe to share, but here's something
that might help.

Janssons Frestelse (Jansson's Temptation)
This dish is so easy to make, almost everyone here in Sweden knows how
to make it. It's a must on every good party, where you serve it 3-4
o'clock in the morning. If the host is "indisposed" there's always
some guest that'll make it -- the few ingredients are readily
available in every decent kitchen, and, as I said, almost everyone
knows how to make it.
8 potatoes
2 onions, sliced
50g butter
2 cans anchovy fillets
3dl light cream
Peel the potatoes, cut in thin sticks.
Drain the anchovies and cut in small pieces.
Put the potatoes, onion and anchovies in layers in buttered baking
dish. The first and last layer should be potatoes. Dot with butter on
top.
Mix the liquid from the anchovies with half of the cream. Pour over
the dish.
Bake in a 200°C oven for 30 minutes. Pour in the remaining cream
and bake for another 30 minutes.

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
