FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The world that we have made as a result of the level of thinking we
have done thus far creates problems that we cannot solve at the same
level as they were created.

EDITORIAL
=================================================================
A letter arrived from a fellow editor, asking, if I've understood it
properly, for collections of our special fido jive. I know there are
lots of stuff like that hiding in the archives of most BBSs; if you
have something you think might be of interest, I hope you are able to
interpret the obfuscated email address in the letter head.
Also there's kind of a manual for those interested in setting up
what must be the best way ever to make fidonet available to users via
the internet. JamNNTPd is *not* just another fidogate program, it's
much more like the old BBS-programs we used to have in the Good Old
Days, only here we use internet rather than a dial-up line, and the
user use his/her favourite news reader rather then the built-in editor
in the BBS. There's also a support echo, JAMNNTPD, available from your
nearby echomail provider, should you have any questions.
As for the nostalgia section this week, am I the only one getting
associations to Luke "Catcalls" Kolin...?

FidoNet archive
By Grant Barrett
<editor at doubletongued dot org>
To whom it concerns:
This is a long shot, but I'm wondering if there's any sort of archive
of FidoNet which traveled over the network. I am particularly
interested in those which do not duplicate content already covered by
Google Groups or the Internet at large. I'm aware that such an archive
would be huge.
The reason I ask is that I am a lexicographer specializing in slang.
I'm always on the hunt for untapped accidental corpora and FidoNet, if
such an archive existed, would be a goldmine.
Thanks, in any case.

FIDONET SOFTWARE REVIEWS
=================================================================
JamNNTPd - a case study
So you finally decided to take a look at that JamNNTPd package you've
heard so much about? And after you've unpacked it, you have absolutely
no clue about what to do with it? Well, then you've decided to read
the right textfile. I did very much the same, half a year ago. It
wasn't until I got a permanent connection to the internet that I
realized what I could do with this package. If you *don't* have a
permanent connection to the internet, you can stop reading here, and
just delete the entire package.
Well, on second thought maybe not -- a local installation of
JamNNTPd and your favourite news reader will probably be a better
combination for reading and writing fidonet echoes than most others
you will find, so stay with us.
What is it?
==========
JamNNTPd is for 'news://...' what Apache, IIS & al are for
'http://...', i.e. it's a server program that lets any user from
internet reach your JAM message base with any news reader they happen
to have installed.
So how do you go about making JamNNTPd work? Well, this is a case
study from my setup. I use WinXP as front-end against internet, and
have (of course!) the built-in firewall enabled. I have several
'mshome.net' workstations connected to the internet via ICS, and on
one of these I decided to setup and run JamNNTPd.
What do I do first?
==================
The first thing you should do, after you've unpacked the zip-file,
is to edit the four config files, jamnntpd.groups, *.users, *.allow
and *.xlat to suit your setup. The help-texts in those files should be
selfexplanatory.
Then what?
=========
Then you have to open up a port in your firewall to allow outside,
as well as inside (usually yourself) callers to reach your JamNNTPd
newsserver. The default port for a newsserver is 119, so this is a
good choice for incoming from internet, and 5000 is usually a good
one for outgoing to your local network. Settings for the WinXP
firewall can be reached from right-clicking on your internet
connection icon in 'Settings'->'Network and Dial-up Connections' and
then click your way to 'Properties'->'Advanced'->'Settings'. Add a new
porthole, lets call it JamNNTPd, with 119, 5000, TCP and the local
name of the workstation where you installed the JamNNTPd server
(localhost will do fine if you installed JamNNTPd on the workstation
FIDONEWS 21-38 Page 5 20 Sep 2004
that your firewall is located on).
Now all you have to do is 'Win-R cmd' and do a 'cd' to the proper
directory and give the command 'jamnntpd' and you're up and running!
Remember that even if your outside callers must use port 119, you
yourself, from inside the firewall, must use port 5000 to connect to
your own newsserver.
So that's it, then?
==================
Once you've made sure it's working, you can start finetuning your
setup. First of all, Ctrl-C stops the server. :) Then you may remember
that the server does not need to be restarted whenever you edit one of
the four config files. Thirdly, even if the defaults usually is a good
choice, if you want a conservative, fidonettish look&feel from your
JamNNTPd newsserver, you might be interested in knowing how I start
it:
jm.bat
------
@jamnntpd.exe -notearline -smartquote -noreplyaddr -m 10 \
-echomailjam r:\sem\fdxit6.60
------
As some of you might guess from the above, I still rely on a
FrontDoor node to take care of most of the things, such as tossing and
scanning echomail. 'fdxit6.60' is a semaphore file that tells my
FrontDoor node 6 to exit with errorlevel 60. That is my major
toss&scan event. I use CrashMail II (from the JamNNTPd author) to
toss&scan my JAM areas, since my old squishmail can't handle JAM.
Can I let anybody in?
====================
In fidonet, we have a very strict policy about real-names and
proper authentication of users, before they are allowed to write
anything in any of our echoes. So, if you setup fidonet echoes, you
must make sure your users are authenticated before they are allowed to
write anything. Reading is, of course, perfectly OK even for anonymous
visitors.
Proper authenticating is also handled by JamNNTPd, based on how you
setup your *.users and *.allow files. Normally you probably will have
a *.allow that only has one line:
'* ABCDE A'
... meaning you let everybody read in your A, B, C, D and E groups
but only write in A (for anonymous).
In *.users you can add more groups, that only authenticated users
may read or write:
# Syntax:
#
FIDONEWS 21-38 Page 6 20 Sep 2004
# <username> <password> <readgroups> <postgroups>
#
sysop password ABISTX ABISTX
#
# I=international
# S=Swedish
# T=beta-test
# X=private
#
user1 password1 AIST AIST
user2 password2 ABIST ABIST
user3 password3 ABIST ABIS
user4 password4 AIST ABST
user5 password5 AIST AI
guest guest AIST A
Well, sysop could just as well have used * for both groups. Poor
user 4 is not allowed to read B groups but can write (probably not a
very good idea), and user5 is not trusted with writing in Swedish-only
echoes. Furthermore, you can add a real-name for any user listed here
(more about that in the main doc).
Then all you have to do, is inform your users to set up their news
reader to "always request authentication to this server" and to have
configured it with the proper nick, true-name and password. It may
interest them to know, that what they enter in the "Organisation:"
field ends up in the origin line, unless you use one of the options,
described in the main doc, to use a fixed origin line of your choice.

T.H.E.Y. Declare Democracy
By Andy Alt
<andy22 at tcq dot net>
Originally Scripted on 09/27/2003
Power to the People! At a press conference yesterday which shocked
mankind on a Global scale, The well-known T.H.E.Y. Commission stated
clearly and without question, "All members of our world-famous council
have unanimously decided to accept ideas and facts from the the common
man. Women are included in this equation."
If someone says to you one month from today, "T.H.E.Y. say that's bad
for you," or "T.H.E.Y. said that it couldn't be done," you can rest
assured that the information obtained will have been thoroughly
researched by not only _The_ High_Establishment_Yarns_Commission, but
also by people as common as you or I. This unprecedented change is
mostly for the benefit of anyone who has ever declared, "I can't
believe T.H.E.Y. said that!" The change will also aid in alleviating a
lot of paranoid citizens; the ones that ask, "T.H.E.Y. said that about
me?"
As I conclude and re-read this article, I recall a particular
statement made by _The_High_Establishment_Yarns_Commission: T.H.E.Y.
said, "After September 11, news reporting will never be the same."

IN THE SNOOZE TEN YEARS AGO
=================================================================
Traffic Violations Bureau
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Canada
My Dear Doctor Logger,
What a surprise to have arrived here in Winnipeg on the one day a year
that people actually go out of doors. This city almost certainly
possesses a climate that is overly mean even for this country, and has
reacted by burrowing underground.
I'm certain that there is no other burg on the planet that actually
prohibits pedestrians from crossing the street at its busiest
intersection. Here in Winnipeg, they've actually built earthworks that
resemble an 18th century fortress around the intersection, just in
case someone would be foolish enough to both be outside and attempt to
cross the street. Obviously, the city fathers were unaware that, once
every 20 years or so, there is an exception from the usual two weather
options, being: 40 below zero, or; huge swarms of insects. Needless to
say, Ms. LaBamba created something of a stir by insisting upon
crossing the street, and doing so while clad in her leopard-skin
Lambada dancing outfit.
Please advise Sylvia that there may be some correspondence forthcoming
from the Winnipeg Traffic Violations Bureau. Some people just have no
sense of humour. Did I mention that I could use a small sum of money
to bail out Ms. Labamba? Ten thousand or so, preferably in small,
unmarked bills would be most convenient.
Back to business. I must confess to having spent the last week
convinced that our beloved RC had passed on to his reward. Not a sign
of him anywhere, and believe me, I have searched in every massage
parlour, table-dance emporium, and cheesy watering hole on the
prairies. It hasn't been pretty.
I even detoured through a place called Gimli, which has a unique blend
of Icelandic, Ukrainian and Cree inhabitants, after hearing a strange
report of a huge windsurfing competition being held there. Naturally,
I went there because I felt it would have been a perfect place for an
RC to hide, and not to witness svelt, wet young ladies with butt-floss
bikinis riding windsurfers. But, sadly, there was no sign of the RC
there either. I did, however, partake in the cultural oddity of eating
perogies, served by a thick ankled, near-albino woman dressed in
feathers, in the "Valhalla" restaurant, which is tastefully decorated
in native mandallas. And they say Quebec is distinct. Go figure.
But finally, after all the searching and waiting, the RC appeared in
the most unlikely place - the regional echo which he 'moderates.'
Needless to say, it was heartening to see evidence that Rick "Weekend
at Bernies" Johnston was, in fact, alive. It was somewhat less than
heartening to see that his first message to his adoring grunt sysops
was a protracted paranoid whine that seemed to insinuate that dark,
FIDONEWS 21-38 Page 9 20 Sep 2004
evil forces are at work in preventing him from performing those highly
technical duties of distributing the nodelist and the 'snooze.
I think he must be right. In fact, I think the reasons for his many,
many absences, the erratic gunboat diplomacy that has led him to
defrock elected NCs, and now the inability to promulgate the regional
nodelists can only be explained by one thing -- The CIA.
I don't think that it's any coincidence that the Excited States of
Murrica is about to invade Haiti at the same time Region 12 is
undermined from within. If you don't believe me, do you think its a
coincidence that Mark Skaff has now returned to Net163 AND that it's
been proven that Elvis' body was actually a large, sweaty wax replica?
I didn't think so. I'll get to the bottom of this, Logger, I'm off to
Washington D.C. as soon as I rescue Ms. LaBamba and Sylvia resolves
the little matter of my Calgary travel expenses. (Honestly, as if I
was the first person to ever hire naked country line dancers. I needed
to witness the Western ambiance firsthand. So to speak.)
I also understand that net250's squabbles grow deeper, and, in order
to receive mail, various factions have now purchased satellite dishes,
which they waggle menacingly at one another. The Almighty has already
expressed His opinion of this occurence, by spiking a few zillion
volts into one of them via a Thor-like lightning bolt. As your
spiritual advisor, I'd offer up this incident as proof of divine
justice, and would suggest that you keep your inbounds land-lined.
Mind you, given the right weather, one can roast a chicken extremely
quickly with one of those dishes.
I'll report in from Washington posthaste.
Religiously Yours,
Rev. Richard Visage
Spiritual Advisor, Region 12

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.

IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the

will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper
folder.
Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
