FOOD FOR THOUGHT
=================================================================
Not only have you been lucky enough to be attached since time
immemorial to a favored evolutionary line, but you have also been
extremely -- make that miraculously -- fortunate in your personal
ancestry.
Consider the fact that for 3.8 billion years, a period of time older
than the Earth's mountains and rivers and oceans, everyone of your
forbears on both sides has been attractive enough to find a mate,
healthy enough to reproduce, and sufficiently blessed by fate and
circumstances to live long enough to do so.
Not one of your pertinent ancestors was squashed, devoured, drowned,
starved, stranded, stuck fast, untimely wounded, or otherwise
deflected from it's life quest of delivering a tiny charge of genetic
material to the right partner at the right moment in order to
perpetuate the only possible sequence of hereditary combinations that
could result -- eventually, astoundingly, and all too briefly -- in
you.

GUEST EDITORIAL
=================================================================
Guest Editorial, Originally The Editorial of FidoGazette, 07152011
by Janis Kracht, 1:261/38
There's a flurry of discussions in the Fidonews echo this week
concerning the style of moderatoring in that echo. As you know, the
moderator of the Fidonews echo is the same fellow who holds the
postion of publisher of the 'snooze, Bjorn Felten. Therefore, until
he resigns his position as editor, we're literally stuck with Bjorn
and his very negligent moderating.
Bjorn subscribes to the hands-off appoach to moderating, in other
words, no moderating at all as far as I can see. This non-moderation
is just too familiar to those of use who reject Listservs,
Newsgroups, and web-related discussion groups because they can be
overrun with trolls, troublemakers and general creeps.. As a matter
of fact, those internet areas are what bring a lot of people to
Fidonet, because they don't want to have to deal with the kind of
environment those groups and discussion areas foster. With no
moderator in sight, these Internet trolls usually overrun online
discussion groups, often killing any meaninful discussions, and
filling their messages with hateful remarks, meant to stir up
reactions from their intended "victim".
The original variety of Internet troll developed years and years ago
as the Usenet troll. These troublemakers would post the same
annoying message into various discussions to increase their chances
of angering a victim, but various other types of trolls also
developed in time:
Insulter trolls jump right in to conversations, hurling insults so
that people will lose their tempers.
Sneaky trolls pretend to be interested in the conversation, but soon
begin posting messages designed to undermine any meaningful
discussion.
Colluding trolls work in pairs to try to steer the conversation's
direction, hoping to destroy it altogether.
So what type of trolls do we see in the Fidonews echo? I'd say all
of the above, perhaps the worst at times being the moderator himself
because he just can't let the chance go by to hurl insults on people
he doesn't like, or doesn't agree with. He carries baggage from
years past when Zone 1 was a much larger entity, as though he fears
Zone 1's return to it's earlier size. Along with his anti-US
statements, he and his colluders have let North American participants
know that he doesn't appreciate those who spell his name with a
non-Swedish character set, meanwhile, his name is spelled in a
latinized style by his own ZC in the nodelist. Requests for Bjorn's
resignation are ignored.
Some Fidonet SysOps avoid the Fidonews echo, sometimes making it
FIDONEWS 28-30 Page 3 25 Jul 2011
passthrough rather than "available" for users, since it has literally
become an anti-US cesspool, and a place where one is more likely to
be insulted, than not. It's been stated by his colluders that if you
don't like Bjorn's style of moderating, you should just leave.
What would we like? Well, I know what I would like: I'd like to see
Bjorn turn the Echo and Fidonews publishing over to someone who cares
a bit more about how the rest of the world views Fidonet, and who
might actually encourage it's growth. JMO.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
