2012 FTSC election, call for nominations
Reminder
An election for FTSC standing members started on Sunday 4th of
November 2012 at 20:00 UTC.
As per FTA-1000.002 the number of FTSC members should be no less than
7 and no more than 30. Of the present 17 members, 8 of them had their
term expire this year. That leaves room for a maximum of 30-(17-8)=21
members to be (re)elected.
From FTA-1001.007
3.2 FTSC Standing Members
-------------------------
FTSC members are appointed for a two year renewable term. [50 % of
appointments on initial formation of the FTSC shall be for a 3 year
renewable term, to ensure continuity of the Committee on expiry of
the terms.]
To be selected as a FTSC member, an individual must be a Fidonet
node, and should be actively involved in Fidonet. Examples include
having put out a Fidonet-related product or having updated a product
in the preceding two years, or having experience as a Coordinator,
Echomail Coordinator or mail or file Hub.
Standing members may be nominated Fidonet-wide by all of the
following methods:
1. Any RC.
2. A nominating committee established for the purpose by the FTSC.
3. A nominating committee established for the purpose by the ZCC.
A nominating committee may not consist of any current member or
officer of the FTSC.
Standing members are appointed on the basis of a vote by all RCs
who are nodelisted as holding those positions at the time the
nominations are published. A successful candidate must receive
approval by a majority of votes.
Publication of the nomination and the voting procedure, and posting
of RC votes, shall take place openly in the FTSC_PUBLIC echo, and
voting shall close three weeks after publication of the vote.
The status of RC's will be determined by nodelist.309 for Z2 and for
the other zones by nodelist.307 as issued by the ZC in the zone where
they reside.
FIDONEWS 29-46 Page 3 12 Nov 2012
All RCs and members of the nominating committee are hereby invited to
nominate members. Nominations may be posted in the FTSC_PUBLIC echo or
in netmail/e-mail to the FTSC adminstrator. (2:2/20, 2:280/5555 or
administrator at ftsc dot org) Nominations received by netmail or
e-mail will be posted in FTSC_PUBLIC.
Nominations start at Sunday, 4 November 2012. 20:00 UTC and end at
Sunday 18 November 2012, 20:00 UTC.
Nominators are advised to sound out prospective nominees before filing
a nomination. There is little or no point in nominating someone that
has not shown interest and expressed willingness to accept.
Note to candidates: The main task of the FTSC is to document current
practise. Contrary to what the name suggests, the FTSC does not create
standards out of the blue. Current Fidonet practise evolves and when
it has stabilized, it may become a standard through FTSC
documentation. Also, the FTSC is not an enforcement body. Those who
wish to join the FTSC in order to "engineer Fidonet" may be in for a
disappointment. Our main job is that of a clerk. We write the
technical manual, we do not design the machine. To avoid
disappointment, sysops interested in joining the FTSC are strongly
advised to read the following documents:

The true MakeNl history
By Björn Felten, 2:203/2
I've recently been asked what I know about the history of the "new"
MakeNl project. All of the most vital history details has been edited
out in the present history file, unfortunately. The reason for this I
will not burden you with, but it was a bad case of incompatible person
chemistry that made the history file lack all the important steps from
2.52 to 3.2.
And, tell you the truth, nowadays I really don't care that other
persons have taken over this former baby of mine. But I do care about
history revisionists getting away with what they do.
This is the netmail exchange that triggered it all. It's in German,
but that's as can be expected, since it was a German effort, by
Michael Karcher, that made all of this possible from the very
beginning:

linkt:
BAUDRATE.C CHECK.C GETKEYW.C FTS5_1.C GETPATH.C FTS5_2.C UPCONT.C
CLEAN.C CONFIG.C COMMENT.C STRCRC.C APPDIFF.C INSTLST.C OPENLST.C
SRCHMAX.C CLEANOLD.C MAKEARC.C MKDIFF.C MAKENL.C VARIABLE.C COPYMOVE.C
ADDRESS.C MSGTOOL.C FTS5_3.C MERGE.C PROCESS.C STACK.C OUTPUT.C

while(*(++workptr) != 0)
{
if(*workptr < 0)
*workptr = '?';
}

ints behandelt.

ja wohl um: "(long*)(unsigned)*NowRunner-OldRunner". Dabei zeigt Now-
GNU C ein long.

After that I took it to my heart and started fixing things. I
cleaned up the reverse engineered code considerably. I deleted lots
of DOS specific tweaks needed on the old 4.77 MHz computers with less
than 640k memory and slow disks. I created various make files for
about half a dozen different platform environments -- enabling it all
to use exactly the same source code for all platforms. From Windows
via linux and OS/2 to Amiga.
My final version was 3.1416 (I guess some of you recognise that
number :) ).
Since then a lot of versions have passed by, but I've lost track of
what significant bugs -- if any at all - have been fixed on the way.
And here's the missing part of history.txt:
----- Version 2.52
20.01.2000 (BF) public prerelease (using DEBUG to edit)
- identical to original version from Ben Baker, except for:
- Year 2000 fixes
- Baud rate check always returns true
- Extended ASCII characters will pass
----- Version 3.00
24.03.2000 (BF) first public release of reengineered C code
+ bug fixes and optional point support
----- Version 3.10
04.11.2000 (BF)
+ make nodelist line handling more robust against long lines>159 char
length
- implemented 32-bit capability
FIDONEWS 29-46 Page 9 12 Nov 2012
+ first Linux version
- compiles under Borland C++ 3.1, Linux-gcc, DOS/Win-gcc (DJGPP)
without source modifications
----- Version 3.11
27.12.2000 (BF)
- compiles under EMX-OS/2+DOS and Watcom DOS+OS/2+Win32
+ new keywords in makenl.ctl:
BatchFile <filename>
CalledBatchFile <filename>
(look in makenl.txt for usage)
- translated history.txt to english
- provided plain ASCII makenl.doc without overstriked characters from
original makenl.prn. To be read with any simple text viewer.
----- Version 3.11
09.01.2001 (BF)
+ changed filenames for Unix :
- MAKENL.CTL default name changed to lowercase
- *.MSG created by MakeNl changed to lowercase
- minor changes for stdout output-prettyfying
+ bugfix according to renaming files with generic names
do not rename if old name is equal to the new name,
otherwise you may lose files in the master-dir
- internal line length limit now #defined in makenl.h
----- Version 3.12
16.04.2001 (BF)
+ Bug in mkdiff.c fixed ( Borland only )
+ Debug-mode implemented for directory-checking
+ os.c/os.h split into several compiler/system-dependant files
- minor changes for source code prettyfying
----- Version 3.12
26.05.2001 (BF)
+ Bug in osdosful.c fixed ( Borland/DJGPP only )
first-level directories work under DOS
+ memory-leak in oslnxful.c fixed ( Linux only )
+ differ works again with 16 bit memory model
----- Version 3.12
01.07.2001 (BF)
+ bugfixes
spawning should work now on DOS again
relative directories work under unix
+ added some debug output in ex-buggy parts
----- Version 3.13
06.07.2004 (BF)
+ fixed the old bug with MakeNl exiting ungracefully
FIDONEWS 29-46 Page 10 12 Nov 2012
after some non-fatal (aka ";E "-class) error
+ changed baudrate control to only use isdigit
+ added ARCcopy/ARCmove/ARCopen verbs to make it
possible to use any archiver
----- Version 3.14
09.07.2004 (BF)
- defaulted the ARCxxxx verbs to the old ARC ditto
- made some minor adjustments regarding case sensitive
command lines, now no longer needed
- removed obsolete (c) message from output screen
----- Version 3.141
11.07.2004 (BF)
- four letters needed to make the ARCxxxx verbs unique...
----- Version 3.1416
13.07.2004 (BF)
- proper dedication inserted...

JAMNNTPD SERVERS LIST
=================================================================
The Johan Billing JamNNTPd project
This is a list of known JamNNTPd servers working. They are essentially
the modern version of Bulletin Board Systems.
You connect to them using the email client of your choice and you
don't need any other software installed on your computer -- regardless
of operating system -- but that favourite mail client of yours.
Even smart phones can handle this, giving you the opportunity to get
your daily doses of fidonet on the bus, tram or train on the way to
your job, school or whatever.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File
----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art

Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe
Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth

Best of Fidonet *.bof | Letters to the Editor *.let
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.

IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the
word "fidonews" somewhere in the subject line! That way it
will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper
folder.
Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
