FOOD FOR THOUGHT
=================================================================
Life is full of choices, if you have the guts to go for it. That's why
I get immediately bored with anyone's complaining about how boring
their life is, or how bad their town is. ****ing leave and go
somewhere else. Or don't.

GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
What Fun Fidonet Is!
By Daniel Torrey, 1:132/505
After an absence of 20 years, I've rejoined Fidonet, and I'm
pleased to see that not much has changed. While there are a few
boring echos where people are civil and thoughtful of others and
the conversation is interesting, an awful lot of Fidonet is
still childish, banal, hateful and thoroughly offensive. It makes me
proud.
Here are Ten Handy Tips (tm) for posting in Fidonet echos, in
particular any echo that has a high percentage of "sysops"
(pathetic middle-aged folks who spend their lives front of their
computers, nursing years of imagined slights and posting messages
that could easily have come from the mind of a twelve-year-old boy):
1) Belittle your opponent at every opportunity. Remember, we're not
here to cooperate and try to communicate or to move the mail around,
we're here to offend each other as much as possible. Call them
liars, insult their culture, belittle their genitalia, accuse them
of drinking bad beer. It's especially important, if you have a
valid point to make or an interesting observation to share, that
you wrap it a lot of insulting language. Otherwise, people might
get the idea that you're trying to be friendly or helpful.
2) Be sure to throw in a couple of racist jokes. Stupid ones.
Remember, this is an international system, and it's important to
represent your country in a positive light. The only way to do that
is to represent other countries/cultures in a *negative* light. The
more hate and bile you can spread, the more your opponents will fear
and respect you. This is why the world today is such a peaceful
place.
3) It's vitally important that you shove your politics down your
opponent's throat at every opportunity. After all, if people didn't
want to hear your opinions, they wouldn't be using your Fidonet,
would they? If you can also parade your religion and sexuality in
front of others, without regard to their feelings on the matter, so
much the better.
4) If you're an American, bring a gun. Hell, bring several. What
these people need is to be taught a lesson they'll never forget,
and a head-shot is the best way to do that. Also, never admit
that any facet of our culture is in need of improvement. Americans
don't make mistakes. Yer either with us or agin' us.
5) If you're not an American, be sure to make a lot of references to
gun culture. In particular, do your best to rub their noses in the
latest gun-related tragedy. It's important to kick people when
they're down, especially if they're bummed out about a few of their
whinnet-ridden kids being scrobbed. Besides, the best contribution
you can make to help the Americans solve their problems is to mock
FIDONEWS 30-03 Page 3 21 Jan 2013
them at every opportunity, because history has shown that this is by
far the best way to effect social change.
6) When reading a message, always assume the worst intentions. If
there's any way to interpret someone's message as insulting to you,
your forebears, your culture, your nation, or your pets, respond in
kind. We all know that text on a screen carries the full intent of
any message; only losers give the opponent the benefit of the doubt.
7) Reasoned discourse is for idiots. The last thing you want is to
learn anything from anyone else. Keep that mind tightly closed!
8) Never re-read your message before posting; it's best to just let
'er rip. You'll never have cause to regret anything you say, because
you can hide safely behind your computer. In your basement. Better
yet, in your Mom's basement.
9) If you don't like what you see in an echo, or a newsletter, hijack
it! The only way to prevent others from spoiling your fun by
disagreeing with you is to shut them up or shout them down.
10) Remember, Fidonet exists for you and you alone! The other 34
people who still donate their time and money to keep this thing going
aren't important. They're just doing the right thing: putting their
efforts into keeping you entertained. And as for the 34,328 people
who used to be in Fidonet, and who gave up in disgust around 1999
and went elsewhere, well screw them, they were all lusers and n00bs
anyway.
If you follow these Ten Handy Tips(tm), you'll be able to rest
assured that nobody will ever accuse you of making a positive
contribution to Fidonet. And by the way - screw you.

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
=================================================================
Cooking with Ward
By Ward Dossche
2:292/854
This week I am offering you a "duo of salmon" that cannot be found
in any cookbook.
Ingredients for 4 people
- 4 wild salmon steaks
- 4-8 slices of smoked wild salmon
- Some olive oil
Do not try this with farmed salmon.
Farmed salmon has a lot of belly fat that may give a displeasing
feeling in the mouth.
How to recognise farmed salmon? Well, it doesn't carry a sign to
say so but if it is Norwegian or Scottish better assume it is
farmed. First of all there is no wild salmon in Scotland, and the
Norwegians don't export whatever they have of it.
Ireland has some wild salmon but it is not exported either.
The only European country to have a guaranteed wild salmon harvest
is Iceland.
North America isn't that problematic, if it's Alaskan, then it's
the real thing. For the smoked salmon I would suggest Alaskan Silver
salmon which in its smoked variety can be obtained in Europe.
Procedure:
- Make certain all the bones are removed from te raw salmon
- Pre-heat a standard oven at 200°C
- Heat an oven pan in the oven
- With a brush grease the oven-pan with olive oil (olive oil
does not burn to black in the pan)
- Place the salmon steaks in the pan and cook in the oven. There
is no pre-set time for this as it may vary with the weight and
size. You have to wing it with the changing colour of the salmon..
When its firm it's usually done
- While the salmon steaks are cooking, spread-out 4 large slices
of smoked salmon
- When the cooked salmon is ready, carefully scoop it out of the
oven-pan and put each serving on one of the slices of smoked salmon
- Wrap the smoked salmon around the cooked salmon. A little bit
of egg-white may be in order to make it stick better
- Replace the wrapped salmon on the still hot oven-plate and put
it back in the oven merely to make the smoked salmon coagulate.
This should be from 45 to 90 seconds max.
FIDONEWS 30-03 Page 5 21 Jan 2013
- Remove from the oven-pan and dress on a plate. Serve with real
mashed potatoes and a salad of fresh green vegetables !
- Stay away from the ketchup !!

WARD'S WONDERING WAYS
=================================================================
WWW ... Ward's Wondering Ways
By Ward Dossche - 2:292/854
The odd things that people will do to enhance their appearance or
that will happen to them:
Marlene Dietrich had all her upper molars removed to emphasize her
high cheeckbones.
Cher had her lowest rib surgically removed to look really slim.
In 1964 a casting director was looking for a man to portray the
US President in a movie called "The Best Man". Someone suggested
Ronald Reagan be offered the role but the director said "He doesn't
have the Presidential look"
Three men were hanged in 1911 for the murder of Sir Edmund Berry.
They were hung in London at Greenberry Hill. Ironically, the names
of the three men were Green, Berry and Hill.

JAMNNTPD SERVERS LIST
=================================================================
The Johan Billing JamNNTPd project
This is a list of known JamNNTPd servers working. They are essentially
the modern version of Bulletin Board Systems.
You connect to them using the email client of your choice and you
don't need any other software installed on your computer -- regardless
of operating system -- but that favourite mail client of yours.
Even smart phones can handle this, giving you the opportunity to get
your daily doses of fidonet on the bus, tram or train on the way to
your job, school or whatever.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration

extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
