because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost.

EDITORIAL
=================================================================
In just a couple of hours it's exactly one year since a powerful
earthquake, measuring an incredible 9.0 on the Richter Scale, occurred
off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake was
powerful enough to cause massive destruction of buildings and other
man-made constructions all over this densely populated area and killed
many thousands. But the worst was yet to come.
The underwater earthquake created a massive wave that, when it
reached land, created the worst tsunamis seen in human recorded
history, killing more than 300.000 people (the exact number will never
be known) and making millions of people homeless in Indonesia, Sri
Lanka, India, Thailand, Somalia, Malaysia, Maldives, Bangladesh,
Kenya, Burma, and elsewhere. An estimated one-third of the earthquake
and tsunami victims were children, and many hundreds of thousands more
were left orphaned or separated from their families.
What made us in the western world pay special attention to this
disaster, cynically enough was that many thousands of visitors and
tourists from nearly 40 western countries were killed in this natural
disaster. This fact did however also make way for one of the biggest
donation programs ever seen, where private and governmental
organizations competed to claim to have donated the most.
Unfortunately not all of those promises were kept, and much of the
donations "disappeared" on the way, mainly due to corruption and
incompetence on the receiving end. But lots of it *did* arrive, and it
really made a difference.
One good thing that came out of this disaster was, that after 30
years of civil war, a forgotten war like so many others in "far away"
countries, in the Acheh Province, the war has finally ended. There
simply is nothing left to fight about, and hardly any people left that
can fight...

*Regional Changes in R13
Shannon Talley 1:275/311 1:13/0
Things constantly change, that is the beauty of the universe. In a
recent change, Thom LaCosta resigned as RC13 & NC261, and I was
asked to wear the hat of RC13 for awhile.
Thom has done an outstanding job for a very long time, and I still
rely on Thom for his advice as I rifle through the R13 node listing
segments preparing for the first Regional node listing segment
upload to Z1C. As a long time Net in R13, I've collaborated with
Thom on many issues, and I know that I'll have some big shoes to
fill.
The only real issue that we have in R13 is that everyone is cross
networked all over the place. This normally wouldn't be an issue,
but having gone through the node list segments, I've noticed that
some haven't been updated in a year (or more).
effected nets include:
107 109 129 150 261 266 267 270 273 275 278 2600
2604 2613 2619 2624
So, if you are in R13 and are a sysop, please join us in R13SYSOP.
We need to begin a collaborative effort so the NC's can network
with me and start submitting node list segments as they should be
doing on a regular basis.
I look forward to collaborating with all of you in R13!
Merry Christmas to everyone!!
Warmest regards,
Shannon Talley

GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
Welcome Back Can Be An Insult
By Frank Vest
I was recently insulted in the Fidonews echo. I was welcomed back.
Since the insult was not intentional, I will overlook it. :) I was
also informed that the readers want to know what I have been doing
since I left the echo some time (years?) ago. I really am flattered. I
didn't know I had so many fans. Perhaps that is the cold breeze I keep
feeling in my undies. :D
Since the readers demand it, I suppose I should write an article. I'm
sure that, according to the accusations and counter accusations, my
article will or will not be published. Ah well..
I don't really remember how long ago I left the Fidonews echo or
stopped writing articles for the Fidonet newsletter, AKA: Fidonews.
The echo and the newsletter are not the same thing, by the way. At any
rate, I shall simply pick a place and start.
The one critical thing that I have been doing is recovering from
cancer. It has been about one year since I was informed that I was in
remission from esophagus cancer. This type of cancer is not an easy
one to fix. Medicine has come a long way, but cancer is still a big
killer. Needless to say, when I was diagnosed, my world kinda
collapsed.
For the curious, I had chemotherapy and radiation treatments. I was
lucky and didn't lose my hair... although it did thin out some. I am
told that not losing one's hair with chemotherapy is a good sign. I
must agree. What do I know anyway? :) I ended up in the hospital a few
times due to reactions from the treatments, but the hospital was the
easy part. I'll tell you straight out, The treatment is about as bad
as the disease. At some points, I would have chosen death and loved
it! Trust me, Hell hath no fury like chemotherapy and radiation!
For the other things I have been doing:
I've been operating my BBS. Even through the cancer treatments, I
kept it going. Sometimes I let things go and left the system down for
a day because I didn't feel like rebooting or fixing a problem, but
it stayed in operation for the most part. I have the greatest Users in
the world. They have stuck with me through it all. I still enjoy
operating the BBS. Few, if any, Users post in the echos, but the games
get played and the regular Users are here every day.. unless they are
on vacation or something. I actually notice when the regulars are not
calling regularly. :)
The BBS now has a web address for message areas. I'll not post it yet
because the BBS computer is not very powerful (a P200 MMX) and the
load from the web server is hard on it. Of course, it's not that hard
to find. :)
FIDONEWS 22-52 Page 5 26 Dec 2005
I've dropped the dial-up access to my system due to financial
concerns. My wife is planning to retire in a year or less and the
retirement income will not be as much as the full time income. The
dial-up access had to go. It hurt. Feels like the end of an era for
me. I suppose it is. I started with dial-up only and have now left
dial-up for Internet access only.
Prior to my cancer, my wife and I were part of the ground crew for a
locally based hot air balloon. Of course, the cancer stopped that for
a while, but I am now back with the crew and enjoying the experience.
The pilot is a good friend and helped me get to my treatments at
times. For that, I am thankful.
My stepdaughter got married and has moved out of the house. As soon
as my stepson graduates from tech school and moves out, we will
experience the "empty nest" thing. The wife and I are ready for the
quiet and privacy.
FWIW, I have two children of my own from a previous marriage and
between them, I have 5 grandkids. I suppose that makes me an old fart,
but oh well. :)
Oh yeah, before anyone asks, even Björn; No, I don't want to be the
Fidonews Editor again. :))
You all have a great day and keep the articles coming! ;D
Regards,
Frank - The former Fidonews Editor and chief bottle washer.

Here Echo, Echo, Echo. Nice Echo. :)
By Frank Vest
I wrote this a long time back, prior to my cancer, and never sent it
in. Who knows, it might give something different to fight over in the
Fidonews echo. <Gasp!> Surly not! :D FWIW, I have no real interest in
this topic now, but who knows what it might stir. :)
It seems that the Echolist, Echo Distribution Systems, Echos,
Moderation and other things related to this thing we call Echomail, is
one topic of discussion in the Fidonews echo.... So, let's talk about
this... or not. :)
Q1: Is the Echolist a part of Fidonet??
A1-1. Has the Echolist ever been in the hands of anyone in any FTN
other than Fidonet??
A1-2. Is the Echolist mentioned in Fidonet Policy 4?
A1-3. Is the Echolist used by all of Fidonet?
Q2: Is Echomail governed by Fidonet??
A2-1. Are the echos carried by Fidonet? Exclusively?
A2-2. What does Fidonet Policy have to say about Echomail?
I really don't know. Draw your own conclusions. For my part:
Q1: Is the Echolist a part of Fidonet??
A1-1. Has the Echolist ever been in the hands of anyone in any FTN
other than Fidonet??
Not that I know of.
A1-2. Is the Echolist mentioned in Fidonet Policy 4?
No.
A1-3. Is the Echolist used by all of Fidonet?
No
Q2: Is Echomail governed by Fidonet??
A2-1. Are the echos carried by Fidonet? Exclusively?
Yes and no. In that order.
A2-2. What does Fidonet Policy have to say about Echomail?
FIDONEWS 22-52 Page 7 26 Dec 2005
A little bit and vague at that. Interpretations abound and little is
agreed to by any individual or group.
To voice my opinion, I believe that the original idea of Echomail was
that it be part of Fidonet, or the FTN that the echo originated/is
carried in. I say this because a FTN address was needed in order to
distribute the echomail in the beginning and Echomail is in essence
just Netmail with an "echotag".
The Elist was/is, IMHO, a method for participants and the management
of the FTN to determine who the Moderator was/is. I say this because I
believe it to be true and due to my belief stated above.
I'm sure that there will opposition to this, but It seems to me that
when Echomail was more under the control of the *Cs, things worked
better. Netmail would make it to the destination with little doubt.
Echomail was handled efficiently and problems were fixed or the
person(s) where the problem originated was dealt with,
Yes, there was a time of CRPs and other things that worked and didn't
work for various reasons. All in all, things worked well and the level
of fighting in echos was less. Spillage of a battle from one echo to
another wasn't as often and other things.
I guess I'm looking for the "good old days". :-)
Ok. There my opinions are. Someone with some balls, write an article
opposing this one. The area to use, for those that can't comprehend,
is Rebuttals. The file extension is .reb and you can send your
rebuttal to the Fidonews Editor.... that is, if you're intelligent
enough to figure out where the Fidonews Editor is and how to contact
him. It's not that hard.
You all let a good day have you.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES
=================================================================
What are you doing
From: Frank Vest
NOTE: This was not written by me.
A college student challenged a senior citizen, saying it was
impossible for their generation to understand his. "You grew up
in a different world," the student said. "Today we have
television, jet planes, space travel, nuclear energy,
computers..."
Taking advantage of a pause in the student's litany, the geezer
said, "You're right. We didn't have those things when we were
young; so we invented them! What are you doing for the next
generation??"

Fidonet Related Websites

One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to
visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet.
A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise
other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring
concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining
an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by
site basis.
It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running
system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at
http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/
The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at
google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on
adverstising revenue from ads.
Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or
both rings.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File
----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.

IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the
word "fidonews" somewhere in the subject line! That way it
will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper
folder.
Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
