     =================================================================

He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without
lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light
without darkening me. That ideas should freely spread from one to
another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man,
and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and
benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire,
expansible over all space, without lessening their density in any
point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our
physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation.
Inventions then cannot, in nature, be a subject of property.

-- Thomas Jefferson, 3rd president of the USA

                                 EDITORIAL
     =================================================================

A new year. Some practical issues at hand, such as finding all the
places in different Snooze configs where the year has to be changed.

But a new year also means a completely blank paper, that this new
year's events will be written upon. A year from now, we will have seen
lots of news passing by. Unfortunately we will probably have seen new
terrorist attacks on democracy. And equally unfortunately this will
most likely result in even more measures taken to "protect" us from
     the terrorists.

The terrorists, or freedom fighters depending on what side you're
on, that attacked what they regarded as the very symbols of US
military (the Pentagon) and economical (New York World Trade Center --
there are actually lots of WTCs other than NYC all around the world)
imperialism, in September 2001, probably could never even in their
wildest dreams imagine how successful they would be in their attack.

From that day on, the entire western world seems to have gone
completely crazy, step by step violating almost every law there is to
grant personal integrity and freedom. And of course none of those
violations has any effect at all against further terrorism.

One major step towards a Big Brother, 1984-ish society was taken,
more or less in secret, by the EU Parliament a couple of weeks before
Christmas. I'm embarrassed to admit that it was basically a Swedish
idea. If this recommendation by the EU Parliament actually makes it to
laws in the different EU countries it will make the US Echelon and
Patriot Acts look like Sunday School rules.

What it says is, that every ISP and Telco must store, and make
available to any governmental institution, information about every
phone call (from and to what number, in the case of cell phone from
what geographical location the call was made), e-mail (from and to
what address) and even all the web sites you have visited. And all
this information must be stored for at least 24 months. Poland has
even suggested that they will make it 15 years!

In case someone is still living in the blue, it's time to wake up
now! Surely we cannot let our politicians use the 2001-09-11 event as
an excuse to deprive us of all our constitutional, civil rights?

        - - - - - - -

One subject, that pops up over and over again in fidonet, is the
issue of copyright. And basically the very strange notion that anyone
can actually own an idea. Humanity has evolved because ideas have been
passed on from generation to generation, and has been freely available
to base new ideas upon. But the last century some people has
introduced the idea that one single person actually can own an idea,
despite the fact that it's always based on previous generation's
     ideas.

Of course it all boils down to money and greed. Making money
without working has always tempted a certain kind of people. The
strange thing is, that some other people, that don't have anything to
gain from this strange notion, actively supports the right to make
money out of our inherited, intellectual knowledge base.

This is the reason for this week's lengthy Food For Thoughts.
Written by one of the greatest minds the US has ever produced, I think
everyone should try to read and understand what Thomas Jefferson was
saying. Albeit on the subject of patent, but any immaterial rights
fits very well into what he's saying.

     =================================================================

                          Death. Let's talk about it.
                                 By Frank Vest

After my article submission last week about what I had been doing
during my absence from the Fidonews echo as well as the Fidonews
newsletter, I read a message from Björn Felten telling about the death
of his mother and father. Death touches all of us at some point. It
can be the loss of a pet, a loved one or our own demise, but death
*will* touch us at least once.

It seems that many suffer from the fear of death. One can see this
when the subject is mentioned. The eyes darken or tear up and other
emotions move to the front line. Some will flee from the subject and
others will attack it or the person mentioning the subject. There are
     all kinds of reactions.

I have faced death two times that stand out in my mind. Once was a
thought of suicide over my divorce from my first wife. I held the
knife in my hand and pressed it to my chest. For some reason, I just
couldn't do it. Call me a coward or whatever, but I think I realized
that life was more important than her.

The second time was when I asked the doctor if my cancer was
terminal. Believe me... there is nothing in the world like asking that
question and having your doctor look you in the eye and say "Yes" in a
calm but sincere voice. That one word will take your breath away, all
the color from you along with all your thoughts and just about
anything else you can think of.

Yeah, death is a morbid subject. But why?? Why do we fear death? Most
cultures have some belief in an afterlife or some such and that life
is generally better than the current one. If this is believed by these
cultures, then why is death to be feared??

Assuming that there is a heaven, paradise or other such place and
that it is a pleasant place where there is no suffering or death , why
would we not want to go there? It would seem that people should not
worry about being hit by a car, where their next meal is coming from,
if they will freeze to death this winter or anything else. So what if
we kill ourselves. Grab the knife and go to paradise.

NOTE!!: I'm NOT recommending that people commit suicide, starve, quit
working or any such thing! Kids, don't try this at home!!! or anywhere
     else for that matter!!!!

So why do we fear death? For me personally, I don't fear death. I
fear the suffering that is often associated with dying and death. I
think this is what many fear. The pain that goes along with the loss
of a loved one or the pain that comes with their own imminent death.
This pain can be physical, mental or both, but it is pain none the
     less.

     FIDONEWS 23-01 Page 5 2 Jan 2006

I am told that my mother had a very easy death. My aunt stated that
she simply took a breath, released it and died. I was not there, but
it was a comfort to know that she did not suffer. So, for all of you,
I wish that you never have to face death. But knowing that you will, I
hope that any death you face is peaceful and without pain.

     Regards,
     Frank

One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to
visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet.

A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise
other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring
concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining
an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by
     site basis.

It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running
system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at
     http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/

The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at
google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on
     adverstising revenue from ads.

Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or
     both rings.

                            How to Submit an Article

If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
     will appear in the Fidonews:

     a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.

     b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
        personal comments.

     c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.

Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

     Ideas for Subject areas:

         Subject File | Subject File
     ----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art
Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur
Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev
Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not
Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que
Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx
Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe
Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth
Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
Best of Fidonet *.bof | Letters to the Editor *.let

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.

Send articles via e-mail or netmail, file attach or message to:

              Björn Felten

IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the
word "fidonews" somewhere in the subject line! That way it
will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper
                folder.

Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
